Macalester College Department of Political Science presents:

POLI 205 ~ Public Policy Issues ~ Affordable Housing

Course Description

This newly designed course explores the politics and processes of public policy development through a combination of academic theory and focused field experiences. Drawing from the political science literature on public policy, students will read widely on public policy theories, concepts, and processes. In conjunction with the theory learned in the classroom, students will be exposed to the practical world of public policy by working as an intern for a local government or non-profit organization.

We focus particularly on the issue of affordable housing in the Twin Cities. Each student will intern for a different organization, recognizing that each organization brings slightly different resources, goals, and perspectives to the table. Regular classroom time is set aside for comparing and contrasting students' diverse experiences in the field, for assessing the fit between theory and practice, and for strategizing about how to most effectively advance their organization's policy goals. Since public policy is a dynamic process, these discussion sessions are essential for bringing to life the complexity of public policy and the variety of perspectives and players involved in the issue.
