CLAS 115 (F06):
Elementary Greek I
This course developes the first basic skills for reading ancient Greek in the Attic dialect, the language of Classical Athens. The second semester of this year-long sequence (CLAS 235) will complete your study of the fundamental grammar of Greek. During this semester, we will focus on learning morphology, simple syntax, and essential vocabulary while reading simple prose. This course has four meetings per week; the “lab” on Tuesdays is treated as a regular class. You will be evaluated on the basis of written assignments, several quizzes and three tests. If you pursue your study of ancient Greek in the Classics Department beyond the first year, you can read major authors in the second year (e.g., Plato, Herodotus, Xenophon, Early Christian scripture, Homer, Euripides), and continue in a third year (and beyond) at the advanced level.
The texts used in this course are the following: M. Balme and G. Lawall (ed.), Athenaze: An Introduction to Ancient Greek, Book 1 (2nd ed.), Oxford: Oxford University Press 2003; and G. Lawall, J. F. Johnson, and L. Miraglia (ed.), Athenaze: An Introduction to Ancient Greek, Workbook 1 (2nd ed.), Oxford: Oxford University Press 2003.
