"One might assume the more famous or prestigious the school the more rigorous it is. Not necessarily. How demanding a school is and how much active learning is going on are matters that have a whole lot less to do with prestige than most college shoppers think. A few years ago, a young friend who had been at Princeton a year and a half and then transferred wrote me, 'I am finding Macalester very satisfactory. The level of teaching is as high as it was at Princeton.'"
