When I arrived for my interview at
Analytics, I found that my reputation
as a Macalester student preceded me. It
was flattering to hear how highly the
senior consultants thought of previous
Macalester interns, and the connection
was a nice foot in the door.
Being in the heart
of a metropolitan
area allows our
students access to almost any kind of field experience they
desire, from formal
corporate settings
to tiny nonprofits.
—Michael Porter,
Internship Director I helped process claims for class
action lawsuits against companies that
had allegedly misled investors. It was
interesting to learn about a growing
industry that most people don’t even
know exists. The most valuable part of
my experience was not the knowledge
of class action lawsuits, but the understanding
I gained about how small
businesses are run.
This was my first experience with
weekly team meetings, and it was interesting
to observe the office culture.
The close, personal relationships at
Analytics made the atmosphere comfortable.
As interns, we were asked
how the firm could increase its efficiency,
and our opinions and
suggestions were valued and taken into
consideration for the future.
A savvy Macalester career counselor
once told me to use every job experience
to figure out something about
what it is I need, or cannot possibly
tolerate, in my future career. This
summer I learned that working with
others is important to me; feeling
appreciated and trusted is a must-have;
and accountability is key to the successful
operation of a business.
