Topic: Events for/with our Students
The meeting was called to order at 10:05 a.m. Open
discussion ensued pertaining to the featured topic as follows:
- “Thank You” luncheon in the spring with entertainment,
good food, decorations, doors prizes every 15 minutes, and treat bags for
everyone in attendance (candy, office supplies)
- Dinner at Cossettas
- Thanksgiving potluck with attendance by professors,
staff, and students over the noon hour; email is used to contact the
students, sign-up sheet is posted; for majors and student employees
- Fall picnic
- Spring softball game (two departments against each
other) w/picnic
- Two open houses, one in the fall and one in the
spring, to include games, prizes, speakers
- Holiday dinner in staff member’s home for student
employees; food from Cossettas, gifts for the students (event sometimes
included a trip to the Holidazzle Parade or karaoke at a bar)
- Senior dinner at the Alumni House, catered, students
bring dessert
- Senior dinner in the Board Room
- Treat day every Wednesday for the majors
- Olin Rice Building – tea every Friday at 3:15
- Email a trivia question every month; those who answer
correctly entering a drawing for a free department t-shirt
- T-shirt design contests
Issues of concern raised throughout the meeting included:
- Use of Tom Leonard Funds (Brenda Piatz will be asked
to come to a future AOP meeting with “approved” guidelines for the use of
those funds)
- Alcohol – how to patrol the drinking; some commented
that you need to know the age of the students at the events and that for the
most part the students don’t abuse the alcohol served
- Faculty don’t contribute at potlucks
- Students have been known to eat like gluttons at some
of the events; “play cop” if necessary
- When overloaded with work, get some of your students
to take charge of the event
Next month’s AOP meeting will be December 13 with a Secret
Santa Party; more information will come from Jane Kollasch and Roxy Fisher.
If you have retreat ideas for January’s meeting, please
send them to Patty Pfalz by Friday, November 11.
Anyone having issues/problems with Document Services should
contact Herta Pitman; she wants to schedule a meeting with Doug Rosenberg.
The meeting adjourned at 11:15am.
