Scholarship and Fellowship Opportunties

For juniors or sophomores:

Beinecke Scholarships - The Beinecke Memorial Scholarship Program seeks to encourage and enable highly motivated students to attend graduate school in the humanities, arts or social sciences. Students must demonstrate "superior standards of intellectual ability, scholastic achievement and personal promise," and must have demonstrated financial need. Students apply during their junior year. Macalester may nominate one student. Campus application deadline: February 10, 2012.

Barry M. Goldwater Scholarships - Goldwater awards are made on the basis of merit to sophomores or juniors who have outstanding potential and intend to pursue careers in mathematics, the natural sciences or engineering. Students who plan to study medicine are eligible for a Goldwater Scholarship only if they plan a research career rather than a career as a medical doctor in private practice. The scholarship pays a yearly stipend to help students complete their undergraduate education. Campus application deadline: December 16,2011.

Humanity in Action Fellowship - The HIA Fellowships brings together international groups of university students and recent graduates to explore national histories of discrimination and resistance, as well as examples of issues affecting different minority groups today. For five weeks, the five HIA European countries (Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Poland) serve as case studies that Fellows can later use as they engage with other human rights issues. Fellowships cover costs of partipation and accommodation for the summer program. Transportation to Europe is not covered. No nomination is required. Deadline for the summer 2012 program is, January 9, 2012.

International Affairs Fellowship for Sophomores - The UNCFSP Institute for International Public Policy is one of the nation's premier fellowship programs in global affairs for underrepresented students. Fellowship components include: Sophomore Summer Policy Institute; Junior Year Study Abroad; Junior Summer Policy Institute; Summer Language Institute; International Internship; funding for an internationally focused advanced degree. Eligibilityrequirements: U.S. citizen or permanent resident; minimum 3.2 cumulative GPA; underrepresented minority; sophomore standing (with two years remaining in degree program); plan to seek admission to an internationally focused advanced degree program. No institutional nomination required. Due to Congressional budget cuts no award will be made in 2012.

Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowships - These fellowships provide financial support toward tuition and living expenses for the senior year; paid State Department summer internships in Washington D.C. and overseas; and fellowship support for master's degrees in international affairs, pending availability of funding. College juniors must have a minimum GPA of 3.20, be U.S. citizens and be interested in becoming Foreign Service Officers in the U.S. Department of State. Students apply directly to the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation; no institutional nomination is required. The deadline is typically in early February.

Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarships - The Ambassadorial Scholarships program offers full support (up to US $23,000) for an entire academic year of study at a foreign institution, and is intended to further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries. Applications are made through a local Rotary club. Please note that the lead time for Rotary Fellowships is quite long. The competition which closed on April 1, 2011 was for the 2012-2013 academic year.

Harry S. Truman Scholarships - Truman Scholarships are merit-based awards which fund graduate school for students preparing for careers in government or elsewhere in public service. Students must have a demonstrated commitment to public service, must be planning a career in public service, and must have outstanding leadership potential. Students apply during their junior year. Macalester may nominate up to four students. Intent to Apply due: November 18, 2011. Campus application deadline: December 16, 2011.

Morris K. Udall Scholarships - The Morris K. Udall Scholarship Program was created to encourage current sophomores and juniors to pursue careers related to environmental policy. Macalester may nominate three students who have outstanding potential and intend to pursue careers in environmental public policy. The scholarship pays a yearly stipend to help students complete their undergraduate education. Campus application deadline: February 17, 2012.
