Scholarship Opportunties
The scholarship opportunities described below require
that you
be nominated by Macalester in order to complete for a scholarship.
Except for the Watson Fellowship, which is open to non-U.S. citizens,
conditions of eligibility for all of them require that applicants be
U.S. citizens or permanent resident aliens. Please make an appointment
to see Ellen Guyer, Dean of Academic Programs, for further information
about these scholarships and the application process.
For seniors:
Fulbright
grants - enable students to combine study with an
independent research
project in a particular foreign country following graduation. Knowledge
of the host country's language is usually required. Open to seniors and
recent graduates who are not enrolled in graduate school. Campus
application deadline: Wednesday, September 24, 2008.
Marshall
Scholarships - Marshall Scholarships allow students to
study for a degree, at either the undergraduate or graduate level, at
any British university. Students who wish to apply for a Marshall must
complete a declaration of interest ,
available in the Academic Programs Office, by September 8 .
A draft of the application essay is due September 22, 2008.
Rhodes
Scholarships - Rhodes Scholarships enable students to study
at Oxford University following their graduation from Macalester.
Students who wish to apply for a Rhodes must complete a declaration
of interest , available in the Academic Programs Office, by September 8 .
A draft of the application essay is due September 22, 2008 .
Watson
Fellowships - Watson Fellowships enable students to spend a
year abroad engaged in an independent study project immediately
following their graduation from Macalester. Macalester may nominate
four seniors, who then have an interview with a Watson Foundation
representative. This competition is
open to non-U.S. citizens. Campus application deadline: Wednesday,
October 1, 2008.
National
Science Foundation Graduate Fellowships - NSF
administers a program of fellowships for graduate study in the natural
and social sciences, mathematics and engineering. The GRE exam
is required. (Note: These fellowships do not require that you be
nominated by Macalester.) Contact Professor Wayne Wolsey in the
Chemistry Department for further information.
Jack
Kent Cooke Graduate
Scholarship - The Cooke Foundation will award
scholarships to help students with exceptional promise (gpa of 3.5 or
higher) and demonstrated financial need complete a graduate
degree. Macalester may nominate two students to compete for these
awards. Candidates must already be accepted into a graduate or
professional school at the time of application for this award.
Candidates need not be U.S. citizens. Campus application deadline: February 26, 2008.
For juniors or sophomores:
Beinecke Scholarships - The Beinecke Memorial
Scholarship Program seeks to encourage and enable highly motivated
students to attend graduate school in the humanities, arts or social
sciences. Students must demonstrate "superior standards of intellectual
ability, scholastic achievement and personal promise,"
and must have demonstrated financial need. Students apply during their
junior year. Macalester may nominate one student. Campus
application
deadline: February 8, 2008.
Barry
M. Goldwater Scholarships - Goldwater awards are made on the
basis of merit to sophomores
or juniors who have outstanding potential and intend to pursue careers
in mathematics, the natural sciences or engineering. Students who plan
to study medicine are eligible for a Goldwater Scholarship only if they
plan a research career rather than a career as a medical doctor in
private
practice. The scholarship pays a yearly stipend to help students
complete
their undergraduate education. Campus application deadline:
December 15, 2008.

S.
Truman Scholarships - Truman Scholarships are merit-based
awards which fund graduate school for students preparing for careers in
government service or elsewhere in public service. Students must have a
demonstrated commitment to public service, must be planning a career in
public service, and must have outstanding leadership potential.
Students apply during their junior year. Macalester may nominate up to
four students. Intent to Apply due: November 3, 2008. Campus application deadline: December 15, 2008.

Morris
K.
Udall
Scholarships - The Morris K. Udall Scholarship Program was
created to encourage current sophomores and juniors to pursue careers
related to environmental policy. Macalester may nominate three students
who have outstanding potential and intend to pursue careers in
environmental public policy. The scholarship pays a yearly stipend to
help students complete their undergraduate education. Campus
application deadline: February 22, 2008.
Goldman Sachs Global Leaders Program - The Goldman Sachs Global Leaders Programs seeks to train and develop tomorrow's educators, policy makers, business leaders, research scientists, social entrepreneurs, and other professionals and to create an international network through which they can share ideas, work collaboratively, and begin to change the world. The competition identifies and rewards the academic excellence and leadership potential of 100 of the most accomplished second-year students from all disciplines. Macalester may nominate 5-10 students for the prorgram. Campus application deadline: November 26, 2007.
