Academic Standing

The college monitors the academic performance of every student in order to offer support and services to those students who are not making satisfactory academic progress. Students are expected to earn their degree within a four-year period. The academic record of every student is reviewed at the end of each semester by the Academic Standing Committee of the faculty. As a result of the Academic Standing Committee's review, a student may be placed on one of several categories of academic probation, which is intended as an indication to a student that he or she is not making the expected progress toward the completion of a Macalester degree. A student is subject to dismissal from the college whenever, in the view of the Academic Standing Committee, his or her level of scholarship is so low as to make the completion of a Macalester degree unlikely. Further information about academic probation can be found in the catalog.

Students who are concerned about their academic performance are encouraged to talk with their academic adviser, seek assistance from the MAX Center, or make an appointment to meet with the Dean of Academic Programs.
