Professor Varberg studies the electronic spectra of free radicals and transient species of astronomical interest. He has received over $1 million in research funding, which has supported the summer research of many Macalester students. He and his students have published 25 research articles since he arrived at Macalester in 1992. Varberg teaches the junior-year courses in Thermodynamics & Kinetics and Quantum Mechanics & Spectroscopy as well as General Chemistry. He has spent sabbaticals in Boulder (Colo.), Oxford (U.K.), Vancouver (B.C.), and Sydney (Australia).
