Native Speaker / Lab Assistant
Neill Hall 303a
With a full name of María Auxiliadora Castillo Soto, her friends call her Auxi for short. A native of Tibás in the Costa Rican capital of San José, she studied English Teaching at the Universidad de Costa Rica in San José, where she is now enrolled in graduate school.
Her first job teaching English was at a primary institution with first, second, and third graders. Later that year, she had the opportunity to work as the Spanish Department's assistant at St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN. Back in Costa Rica she finished her studies while working for the Associated Colleges of the Midwest (ACM) as a Spanish teacher, where she got to know some Macalester students. Before joining Macalester as a Native Speaker, she worked with adults at a multinational enterprise as an English Specialist.
Auxi brings a positive, open and patient attitude, as well as a love of learning about cultures and people, to her teaching. Not content with Spanish and English, she speaks Swedish and a little bit of Norwegian. She enjoys languages because they bring people closer to cultures other than their own. She hopes to complete a Masters in Spanish Teaching as a Second Language and wants to continue to travel and get to know the world and its people better.
