StatisticsChanges

To remain in step with the ever-evolving field of statistics, we have revised the statistics minor and curriculum.  These changes will go into effect during the 2014-15 school year.   If you have any questions about the details outlined below, please contact Alicia Johnson (ajohns24@macalester.edu) or Victor Addona (addona@macalester.edu).

CHANGES TO THE STATISTICS CURRICULUM

Math 155: Introduction to Statistical Modeling. No changes.

Math 253: Statistical Computing and Machine Learning

  • Title Change: from “Applied Multivariate Statistics” to “Statistical Computing and Machine Learning”.
  • Math 253 has naturally been moving in this direction.  This course emphasizes the important computational skills scientists must develop to access, analyze and draw dependable conclusions from large, complex data sets.
  • Prerequisite: Math 155
  • 1 section each semester.
  • This will first be offered in 2015-16 (no 253s will be offered in the 2014-2015 academic year)

Math 254: Probability and Mathematical Statistics

  • Change number from Math 354 to Math 254, and teach it at the 200 level on par with math courses, Math 236 Linear Algebra and Math 237 Multivariable Calculus. Placing this course at the 200 level represents the best new thinking in statistics education.
  • Title change from “Applied Probability” to “Probability and Mathematical Statistics”
  • Prerequisite: Math 137 (Math 237 strongly recommended)
  • Offer 2 sections per year, 1 per semester.
  • This course is no longer a capstone course.

Math 353: Survival Analysis

  • Change title from “Modern Statistics” to “Survival Analysis.”  This is one of the two topics that had been taught under the topics course Modern Statistics.
  • Will count for the Community and Global Health concentration.
  • Prerequisite: Math 253 or Math 254
  • Offer 1 section per year
  • Is a capstone course

Math 355: Bayesian Statistics

  • Change title from “Modern Statistics” to “Bayesian Statistics.”  This is the other of the two topics that had been taught under the topics course Modern Statistics.
  • Prerequisite:  Math 253 or Math 254 (highly recommended)
  • Offer 1 section per year
  • Is a capstone course

Math 394: Research Topics in Statistics

  • A small topics course
  • Offer roughly 1 section every 2 years
  • This will not be offered until 2016 or 2017

New Statistics Minor

  1. COMP 121 or COMP 123 or an equivalent course,
  2. MATH 155,  and
  3. Any 3 of the following: MATH 253, MATH 254, MATH 353, MATH 355, or MATH 394.  Students preparing for graduate work in statistics are also encouraged to take MATH 236 and MATH 237.

FOR 2014-2015 ONLY: We will allow students to substitute MATH 365 or ECON 381 for MATH 253.
