Hi, I'm Adrienne Christiansen of the Political Science department and I'm here at the incredible Machu Picchu, Peru in order to share a simple but powerful revision strategy that can really improve the quality of your prose. And that strategy is to read your sentences aloud. If you find yourself short of breath or needing to take a breath in the middle of a sentence, it's almost certain evidence that your sentence is simply too long and it needs to be revised or broken into two separate sentences. The ancient Inca people did not have writing, but if they did I'm confident that they would have recommended this strategy because carrying these incredible rocks and building this extraordinary site requires enormous breath. As you revise your prose, remember: read your paper aloud and revise any sentence that causes you, like climbing around Machu Picchu, to be short of breath. Good luck and write well.
