Hi. I’m Adrienne Christiansen of the Macalester College Political Science Department and this microlecture is on significance. The time is now 9:23 p.m. I just got home from work. My family’s in bed, my beloved is in bed, even my dogs are in bed and I’m about to start grading papers. One of the things that can help you as a writer is early in the introduction, early in the paper, is identifying what makes your paper significant. What about your argument, what about your idea is worthwhile? Don’t make the mistake of presuming it is self-evident, or because you’re interested in the topic that anyone else necessarily is. So remind us, your reader, your tired reader who also wants to go to bed, what matters about your topic. Significance. It helps us know why we’re reading this at all. Good luck, and write well.
