Hi. I’m Adrienne Christiansen of the Macalester College Political Science Department, and the subject of this microlecture is thesis. What’s a thesis? A thesis is your paper’s main idea or argument. It states the contestable claim that you intend to develop in the body of the paper utilizing good reasoning and excellent evidence. We sometimes use words other than thesis to get at the same idea. These words include: claim, argument, position, or proposition. Remember, you’re writing an essay, not a mystery novel and so you’ll want to state your thesis clearly, unambiguously, and in the introduction of the paper. So don’t delay, and make us wait to the conclusion to find out what it is you are arguing. Thesis. It’s your main idea. Good luck, and write well.
