Call for Public Comments

Macalester College invites the public to comment in preparation for its periodic accreditation review process. Macalester College, established in 1885, was first accredited in 1915. It has been re-accredited at regular ten-year intervals, with its last accreditation in 1996. Macalester College is seeking re-accreditation through the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association in Spring 2006.

On March 27-29, 2006, Macalester will undergo a comprehensive evaluation visit by a team from the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association. For the past two years, the college has been engaged in a process of self-study, addressing the Commission's requirements and criteria for accreditation. The evaluation team will visit the institution to gather evidence that the self-study is thorough and accurate. The team will recommend to the Commission a continuing status for the college; following a review process, the Commission itself will take the final action.

Comments must address substantive matters related to the quality of the institution or its academic programs. Comments must include the name and address of the person(s) providing the comments. Comments cannot be treated as confidential. Please note specifically that the Commission by policy will only forward a comment to the evaluation team and institution when it may also forward the name and street address of the commenter.

All comments must be received by February 28, 2006 to be considered. All comments received by that date will be reviewed by the Higher Learning Commission.

All U.S. colleges and universities are required to seek reaccreditation from a regional accrediting association at least once every ten years. Macalester College's last accreditation site visit was in the spring of 1996. In March of 2006, a team of consultant-evaluators from the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association will visit Macalester to make a recommendation related to our next request for reaccreditation. Part of the process in preparation for this site visit involves the development of an extensive self-study. This is the home page of the self-study committee at Macalester College.
