Self-Study
Questions for
Departments and
Programs
Department Chairs and Program Directors:
By December 1, 2004, please work with your department or program colleagues
to develop a three to five page narrative report (plus any appendices
you might regard as helpful) which responds to the following questions.
A member of the self-study steering committee has agreed to serve as liaison between the committee and your department or program and will be setting
up a meeting with you and your colleagues within the next week or two
to discuss the self-study process and these questions. Thank you for your
help with this important project.
Questions to be addressed:
- Macalester's Statement of Purpose and Belief describes the goals of
the College as a whole. How does your department or program describe
its specific goals and objectives?
- What do you regard as the primary strengths of your department or
program? What evidence supports this conclusion?
- What do you regard as the primary concerns, needs, or challenges related
to your department or program? What evidence supports this conclusion?
- What steps are you taking to try to strengthen your department or
program?
- For academic departments and programs and administrative departments
which have had external reviews. What strengths and challenges
were identified by the review team at the time of your last external
review? What recommendations did the team make? What actions have been
taken in response to those recommendations?
- For academic and student services departments and programs.
What are the key features of your department's program for assessing
the extent to which the goals you have for your students have
been achieved?
During the past five years, what changes has your department
made in the way you assess the achievement of these goals?
During the past year or two, what have you learned from your
qualitative and quantitative assessment activities?
What changes have been made by your department or program in
response to what you have learned?
Who is my liaison?
