This guide is designed to help students "find a school that won't force you to choose between your desire to make the world a better place and your desire to succeed in college."

The Fiske Guide has named Macalester one of
the 26 Best Buy private schools and notes that
one of Mac’s hallmarks is “an internationalist view
of the world.” Fiske is a selective guide and presents
schools in subjective rather than statistical terms.
“Mac attracts the best and brightest. …Macalester
students are an open-minded, friendly bunch, more
politically and socially progressive than their peers
at similar institutions. The school provides an atmosphere
of high-powered scholarship and success, pairing academic
rigor with global perspective.”

"Undoubtedly, a Mac education is the ultimate
preparation for success in academia, law, medicine,
social service and business. But more importantly,
Mac is an exceptional environment of life-altering
enlightenment, life-changing experiences and lifelong
friendships.” Written for high-achieving
students, Barron’s Guide presents detailed
profiles for nearly 70 of the most academically competitive
four-year colleges across the United States.
“Alumni networking plays a powerful and positive
role in the careers of many Mac graduates.”

The Insider’s Guide provides information
about “day-to-day life” at each of 322
colleges and universities, based on personal interviews
with college students. At Macalester “students
rave about the availability of professors. …Volunteerism
and social justice are important focuses of campus
life.” A student reports, “The opportunities
at Macalester are so vast that its reach spans the
globe.” The guide notes that “entertainment
on campus abounds and social life is almost as diverse
as the student body itself.”
Student Success in College, a study by a
group of higher-education researchers has created
a list of 20 colleges and universities that create
a campus culture that fosters student success.
This list is not a ranking; its goal is to identify
institutions that do an especially good job of educating

This Washington Monthly guide seeks to asses what “colleges are doing for the country,” based on data about social mobility, research and s ervice. Among 201 liberal arts colleges, Macalester ranks 11 for the number of bachelor’s recipients who go on to receive PhDs and 12 for the percentage of students who go on to serve in the Peace Corps.

International. Macalester ranked 5th for international student presence on campus. The report notes that "in today's global culture,
getting to know and learning to collaborate with foreign
students can be rewarding personally and professionally."
Study Abroad. Macalester's study abroad program is one of 12 that "involve substantial academic work for credit--a year, a semester, or an intensive experience equal to a course--and considerable interaction with the local culture."
Great Schools at Great Prices. The college is ranked 9th based on "academic quality and the net cost of attendance for a student who receives the average level of financial aid."
Macalester ranked 26th overall and 14th for academic reputation among the 266 national liberal arts colleges in the latest U.S. News & World Report rankings.
Advocate College Guide for LGBT Students
recognized Macalester as one of the 100 Best Campuses
for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT)
students in the United States. The guide's 100 profiled
campuses were selected based on institutional policies,
commitment and support, academic life, housing, student
life, counseling and health services, campus safety
and recruitment and retention efforts.
