"I have interviewed numerous Ivy League economics majors
with very strong GPAs and SATs above 1500. Yet very few of
them had actually engaged in serious or independent empirical
research or found it necessary to synthesize their study of
economics with other disciplines. The intellectual horsepower
of these students was never in doubt. However, I question
the degree to which their respective institutions pushed them
and sought to bring out this horsepower in its fullness. Frankly,
I think that each of them would have been better served with
a Macalester education."
