For students admitted to Macalester through the first-year admissions program, Macalester will accept for credit no more than the equivalent of twenty Macalester credit hours from courses earned at a college or university prior to matriculation at Macalester. Summer session college credits, Minnesota Post-Secondary Education Options Program credits, International Baccalaureate credits, and Advanced Placement Program credits are included under this limitation.

How selective is Macalester?
- 41% of applicants were admitted for the fall of 2007 school year. Of those who enrolled at Macalester, 67% were in the top 10% of their high school class, and 39 were National Merit Scholars and Finalists.
- The middle 50% of Macalester students:
--scored within a range of 28 to 32 on the ACT.
--scored within a range of 630 to 730 on the Critical Reading
of the SAT and 620 to 710 on the math section.
- Macalester also looks carefully at non-academic involvement and achievements.
Many factors (recommendations, essays, interviews, leadership potential and abilities, and extracurricular activities) are considered in our evaluation of each applicant's admission credentials.
Macalester recommends a secondary school curriculum with four years of English, three years of history or social science, three years of mathematics, three years of laboratory science, and two years of a single foreign language. In addition, applicants are expected to have taken at least some of the honors or advanced courses available at their secondary schools.
