EARLY, REGULAR AND DEFERRED ADMISSION

Early Decision

Each year about 25 percent of the first-year students who enter Macalester applied under one of the Early Decision Plans, which are designed to provide early notification for candidates who are sure that Macalester is their first-choice college. For many students, this option can resolve the anxieties of college choice early in the senior year.

Early Decision I applicants whose applications are completed by November 15 will receive a decision from Macalester by mid December. Early Decision II applicants completing their applications by January 2 will receive notification by early February.

Some candidates who are not accepted under the Early Decision Plan will be notified that their applications will be considered with the Regular Applications group and they may be admitted in April.

When students apply for early decision they must sign an agreement that they will enroll if offered admission.

Regular Decision

Most of Macalester's first-year students apply under the Regular Decision Plan, which has an application deadline of January 15. Go to the First-Year Application Checklist for a list of materials needed to complete the application.

Deferred Admission

Each year, some students who have been offered first-year admission to Macalester request the deferral of their admission. Deferrals may be granted for a variety of reasons, most commonly to allow a student to spend time overseas. Deferral requests, which are approved at the discretion of the Dean of Admissions, are granted for a period of one academic year. There are no semester deferrals. Candidates should be aware, however, that Macalester will accept no more than the equivalent of 20 semester credit hours for academic work completed prior to matriculation at Macalester, whether earned during secondary school or during the deferral period. Deferral requests or questions about the deferral process should be directed to the Admissions Office.

Students may receive credit for up to 20 semester credit hours of academic work completed during the deferral year. Decisions regarding credit are made by the Registrar. For more information, see the section on Advanced Standing or phone the Registrar's Office at (651)696-6200.
