International Transfer students must complete their application by Jan. 15 for consideration. Macalester does not offer a spring transfer option for International Transfer Students.

Completing Your Application

Macalester uses the Common Application for Transfer Students.

Apply Online

Required Forms and Test Scores

Note: all forms are available via the apply links above.

  • Common Application
  • Writing Supplement (via the Common Application)
  • Official SAT or ACT Test Scores
    Macalester's identification codes are: SAT (6390) and ACT (2122).
  • Official TOEFL or IELTS Score
    (For students whose primary language is not English)
  • Two Academic Reports (Professor/HS Teacher Recommendations)
    Request the academic reports via the Common Application online process. Reports will be accepted from core academic subjects (English, social studies, foreign language, mathematics or science). One report must be from a college professor, the other may be either a college professor or high school teacher. If you have been out of college for more than one academic year and have difficulty obtaining an academic report, contact the coordinator for transfer admissions at Macalester to explain your situation.*
  • Registrar Report
    Request the registrar reports via the Common Application online process. Be sure to use the Dean of Students at your current or most recent college and give her/him ample time to complete the form prior to the application deadline.*
  • College/University Transcript(s)
    You must have an official transcript of all college-level coursework sent to Macalester directly from the school or via an official online transcript service. A transcript issued to the student is not considered official. You must have transcripts sent from all colleges you have attended.
  • Final High School Transcript
    Request that your secondary school send Macalester an official final transcript of your classes and transcript grades beginning with 9th grade. If you attended more than one high school, check to make sure all years are included on the most recent transcript.

*The counselor and teachers will be prompted to complete their portion of these forms online. If your counselor and/or teachers prefer to mail your school report, midyear report, transcript and/or teacher evaluations, they can be mailed to Macalester College, Admissions Office, 1600 Grand Avenue, St. Paul, Minnesota 55105-9984.

Arts Portfolio

Students who have made a substantial commitment to the arts (in the areas of Fine Arts, Music, Theater or Dance) are welcome to submit samples via the Macalester Application Portal. Information to access the portal is provided after submitting your application.

Application Fee

Submit the $40 fee online with the Common Application or request a fee-waiver (which is part of the Common Application).

Financial Aid

If you wish to be considered for financial aid, you must indicate your interest when you apply via the Common Application. For more information, visit the Financial Aid website. International Students who apply for financial aid must provide an International Certification of Finances and International Financial Aid form or College Scholarship Service (CSS) profile as part of the application process.

Check Your Application Status

Use your Macalester Application Portal to learn what has been received and what is missing. You will be sent a username and password soon after the Common Application has been received.

You may have your transcripts evaluated by the Macalester Registrar’s Office for the transfer of course credits. This evaluation is only preliminary.

All candidates for a Macalester College degree must successfully complete at least four semesters on the Macalester campus.

Transfer of Credits

Macalester will accept for credit no more than the equivalent of two years (sixty-four credit hours) from courses earned at a college or university prior to matriculation at Macalester.
