We've been a bit busy here this week because mid-term grades are due on Friday. But happily for us, once we reach Friday, Spring Break is upon us and we are finally liberated. I almost feel like I took some easier classes last semester... but it might simply be that I've ventured away from my typical science classes and I'm adapting to new ways of thinking. I'm especially excited about my Indian Philosophies class lately... and I just became more excited because after Spring Break my professor will be starting a yoga class on Monday nights. I've never taken yoga, but obviously feel this is the best time in order to pair the practice with the philosophy. Right now, in fact, I'm writing this blog as a break from my commentary on the beginning of the Yoga Sutras.
Anyway, last week we had a snow day on Friday, which was wonderful. I forgot how wonderful they are, I mean, I don't think I've had so much fun playing in the snow since middle school. The people here really seem to embrace the weather as best they can. In the fall, many students would be outside on the lawn studying, while last Thursday and Friday whenever I'd go outside (including at post midnight) there'd be snowball fights, igloo building, and snow sculpting galore. And quite typically, now that it's starting to get slightly warmer as we approach spring, I see flip-flops and shorts at any temperature above freezing.
In other happy news, I've finally accomplished the typical small liberal arts student ordeal... yes, I had a coffee date with two different professors in the past month. I know that almost every small liberal arts school boasts "small classes and intimate relationships with professors," and now I can attest to such greatness. I feel that I can readily ask my professors questions during office hours, come back the next day, and continue as if I had never left. This wouldn't be possible had I decided on Northwestern last year because of the larger class sizes. But of course, there are pitfalls to the small liberal arts school system. Mainly, the small number of sections per class doesn't allow students to select their professors. So say there's a professor who doesn't mesh with your teaching style... but this prof is the only one teaching that one class you've been dreaming to take ever since you entered Macalester... well, sadly you may be out of luck.
Thankfully spring break is almost here... I'll be off to visit my grandparents in Florida.
