My spring break was relaxing. I spent the week
with my host family. I learned one very important thing—not
from books, not from school, not from lectures and not from
professors either: how to cook a proper meal. After promising
to cook dinner, I thought I would make fried chicken drumsticks
and order some Vietnamese dishes, but the restaurant didn’t
make what I wanted. Then I thought ordering pizza might be
a good idea, so I opened the phone book to find the phone
number for Pizza Hut. All of a sudden, I firmly closed the
yellow page book, and got ready to go shopping for some groceries.
“Why not just give it a try, I can still order pizza
if I ruin everything,” I told myself. Eventually, after
two hours trying my best not to mix salt with sugar and attempting
to keep the kitchen from being burned down, dinner was ready
to serve. My host parents said they thought the meal was great.
Phew!
Some of my friends chose to travel more exciting places such
as Chicago, Boston, New York, Washington D.C and Puerto Rico.
Oh well, although I did virtually nothing, it was great just
to relax and get some more sleep. I watched season four and
five of “24 hours” in just three days, isn’t
it amazing? (or perhaps crazy!)
Yesterday, I went with Pluralism & Unity (P&U) group on a short trip to the
British Development Center to listen to the overview of a
‘Dream’ Project: “Bridges,” a development
project that might or might not be built in the west side
of Saint Paul. We listened to the opinions of the city council,
the local community representatives and the developers. It
was great to learn a little about public policy regarding
economic development, particularly when the plan goes against
the community's favor.
This is my personal advice for you: apply for P&U group,
you don’t want to miss the experiences that I had as
a current member of P&U. Oh, when we first stepped into
the 1-million dollar model room, a friend of mine –
being so obsessed by the fancy interior design as if she owned
the room for herself - shouted out loudly: "Honey, I'm
home! Where are you?" A guy quickly replied: "I'm
working to pay off the mortgage, honey!" We had serious
discussions, promoting critical thinking as well as having
a great dinner together at a Spanish Café.
The admission letters have been sent to the U.S. students
and the international letters will be mailed in a couple of
weeks. I’m sure you must be anxious to hear from Macalester
as well as other colleges. Get ready to ask questions on the
Mac Forum.
