At Mac Fall Break lasts four days, a short four days at that. Well, don’t get me wrong here! As a student, I would say that a break is never long enough no matter how many days I have. This break left me time to think.

I thought it could be boring once the break comes because many would go home and enjoy the sweetness of family life while I have to stay in an empty “hurricane-proof” Dupre dorm room. However, it turned out that a significant Mac student population stayed on campus during the break. How could they not want to go home? I have the answer to that: "How could they not want to stay!"

The break started with an "overnight" Halloween Dance Party at Kagin Commons. If you become a Mac student, my advice is never to miss such an event. I went around 2 a.m. with a bunch of broken skeletons and wicked witches whom I call "friends." Covered with streams of luminous smoke and nerve-breaking music, the dancing stage seemed like a five-star discotheque. We danced, and talked, and danced, and talked… until we got so lethargic we decided to go back to sleep. Next week, there will be Trick-or-Treating, a Halloween party night, a dressing contest, and a Halloween movie. I love college life.

Let me give you a recap of what Mac students do in the break, just so you know that we are not just "walking-skeletons." Some group decided to go on a camping trip, which was fantastic. Some chose to stay home, go shopping, watch movies, and enjoy life free of any school-related work. My roommate went to a rock concert in downtown Minneapolis; he came back at 3 a.m. and showed me his new shirt: “Mr. President, we hate you. You don’t know how to rock."

At Mac, I enjoy every moment I’m here, even during exam time. I remember a story from Professor Raymond Robertson about the butterfly when he tried to console his "dear" economics students about the mid-term result. You have to let the butterfly slowly and painfully make its way out of the caterpillar hole so that it becomes a beautiful butterfly. Trying to cut open the caterpillar to skip the process will kill the butterfly because its wings are not strong enough to fly.

Oh well, back to the break. No more talking about mid-terms. One night my roommate was escorted home by some guys from the Cross-Country team. Those junior and sophomore guys made me feel the warmth of being a Mac student. My roommate kept saying, "I owe you guys." They replied with caring passion, "No need to thank us, just make sure that you take care of the freshman next year." I could not believe that they actually came back at 4 a.m. to check that my roommate was alright.

That is the spirit of Mac students--that’s why we are writing this first-year experience to portray exactly how it is. This time one year ago, I was just like you, browsing through colleges’ websites and looking for the one that matched my type. I found it. Here.
