“Life here at Mac is good. People are always willing to hang out and enjoy some low-key fun, and there are always people ready to go on some sort of expedition in the Twin Cities or the mall. Really, there are just a lot of options here during our spare time, and they are very real options that people do, in fact, take advantage of.”

See this week's photos.

This is election week. As an international student I couldn’t officially join the battle and vote, but I could feel the heat rising as election day approached. Every day for the last two or three weeks, leaflets about the election were delivered to my room. Every staircase around the dorm had election pamphlets posted on the wall. Some of them are completely college, “If you don’t vote, you will get a monkey in office again.”

All Macalester students vote at the church just across the street from campus and students can register to vote on election day, so every student who wants to vote has the chance. I guess a nice thing at Mac is that no one is too extreme about politics. People talk about it in an openly respectful way.

Before I decided to enroll at Mac, I had such vague of an idea whether this college would suit me. I’ve asked some other first-year students who also had offers from many different colleges why they wanted to enroll at Mac. Since these are personal opinions, all names remain anonymous.

“One thing you could tell about Macalester without a doubt is its diversity. I studied at an international high school before, but never experienced multicultural internationalism at such a high level.”

“Mac was a better fit for me. I learned that at Mac students study really hard and also have fun. I didn’t find that at my other top choice.”

“I have friends who go to the University of Minnesota. They go to lectures that are about twice as big as Mac’s entire first-year class. If I were there I would probably just skip class and stay home to read the books; here I go to class”

Another thing I like about Mac is the size of the campus. It takes 15 minutes at most to walk from one end to the other. I find it so convenient, especially when I have to go from one department to another within a 10-minute break for the next class.

I was absolutely overwhelmed the first few weeks as I was trying to explore as many things as possible. There are tons of meetings, movies, retreats, dinners, talks, symphonies, concerts, dances, sports, drama plays, clubs, parties…there isn’t enough time to go to all of them. Information about internship and research opportunities or jobs available for students get sent to my mailbox every day. And of course, I can go to the library or common rooms in the dorm and enjoy complete tranquility to do homework. Unless you choose to be a lazy cat and stay in your room all the time, you will get to know everyone after several months.
