Andrew Meeker

During my study away, I did an independent research project on refugee identity. Specifically, I was looking at refugee oppression, access, and prejudice the person experiences in that place. I worked with a refugee activist group called People Against Suffering, Suppression, Oppression and Poverty (PASSOP).

During the six months I studied abroad in South Africa, I didn't see any lions or go on any safaris, and I definitely didn't dive with any great white sharks. Macalester's Globalization and Natural Environment study-abroad program at the University of Cape Town offered me the perfect chance to explore a new city and broaden my studies.

Read his story

John Koenig studied in Cameroon. From his journal entry: "This final week has been incredible. At one goodbye party, I listened to a Cameroonian friend tell me the names of all of his 33 siblings, twice. I learned from a tracker what to do if you’re being stalked by a gorilla. ... This is starting to feel like leaving home. I can’t imagine staying away for long."

My childhood fascination with ancient Egypt, and especially the pyramids, made my decision to study abroad in Egypt an easy one. ... Studying Arabic at the American University in Cairo, I met some amazing people--native Egyptians, diplomats from various nations, and other Americans. Nothing beats the feeling of relaxing by the Nile, drinking mint tea and talking politics with other Americans and Egyptians of all walks of life.

Read Robert's story

Robert Spurlock, Brent Hecht and Peter Gartrell spent their January break with a Macalester professor in Tunisia to study this ancient city. They traveled throughout the country, scaling ancient ruins, exploring bazaars and bartering with merchants.
