Global Governance

As an economics major and statistics minor, I may not frequently advocate for political science courses, but I urge you, dear reader, to consider taking “Global Governance,” taught by Professor Weber. I believe it will be one of the most important and rigorous courses of yourMacalester career. “Global Governance” corrects a number of misperceptions, the biggest being that global governance implies global government. It is
not only about institutions in the literal sense, but about mechanisms such as human rights law that guide international and national action. Today the world is so globalizedthat an economic recession in the U.S. or political instability in Africa affects the entire world. In the human rights module, I wrote an article about human rights law, mimicking the style of a journal or a magazine. I wrote an academic analysis on detainment and torture methods in the United States’ war on terror. The module also featured a simulation of the United Nations Security Council. As a representative of the Chinese government, I had to debate, negotiate, and compromise on human rights and national security issues, which made me appreciate the effort and diplomacy involved in solving world problems.
