Steve Cox has been an extremely active and valuable Macalester volunteer for years. Under his leadership as M Club president, the organization has grown into an active group of varsity letter alumni who support athletics and honor Mac’s former athletes. One of the highlights of Cox’s tenure was helping to organize the "We Are All Athletes" banquet, which brought women athletes who took part in non-varsity sports prior to Title IX into the M Club.

As a longtime director, Cox has worked hard to be an ambassador for Macalester athletics. His love of the college also manifests itself in many other ways, including helping to organize "Meet the President" night for his decade, this year’s reunion committee, the Annual Fund, the Alumni Board and the committee to raise funds for the new athletic facility.

As a student, Cox majored in history with core concentrations in English and philosophy. A varsity athlete in both soccer and hockey, he studied abroad in Nepal, was active in student government and residence hall councils, and helped organize the first campus celebration of spring, which is now a Macalester tradition. Cox currently teaches at Washington Middle School in St. Paul. He coordinates the Special Events and Recreation Program for the Minnesota Institute for Talented Youth held at Macalester each summer. He also coaches girls’ varsity soccer at Como Park Senior High School where he was named Coach of the Year for his conference and section in 2004.

Gabrielle Lawrence ’73, director of alumni relations, wrote of Cox: "Always positive and enthusiastic, a strong supporter of Macalester and a consistent donor, he is a wonderful role model for Macalester alumni of all generations."
