Christopher Goes to War

Part of the Center for Independent Artists’ Adventure Festival (website), this collaboratively created, improvisation-based theater piece uses British author Christopher Isherwood's life as a lens to explore the intersection between war and identity. Conceived and directed by Molly Balcom. Featuring and created by May Mahala ’01, Marit Peterson, and Nathan Tyluki. Video and sound design by Dameun Strange ’95.

Ragamala Music and Dance Theater, where Tamara Nadel ’95 is program director, presents SETHU (BRIDGE), a global performance collaboration featuring 50 artists from India, Indonesia and Minnesota, Sept. 22-24 in the O'shaughnessy Auditorium at the College of St. Catherine. In times of cross-border and religious strife, SETHU (BRIDGE) connects cultures and ways of understanding. An international cast comes together with spiritual energy for a stunning presentation of the epic Hindu myth, the Ramayana. Ragamala Artistic Director Ranee Ramaswamy brings together Bharatanatyam (classical dance from southern India), Balinese kecak (the famous “monkey chant” rarely heard outside of Indonesia), Balinese dance and Javanese Gamelan, and a south Indian orchestra to bring this captivating spectacle to life. Concept by Ranee Ramaswamy. Created in collaboration with I Dewa Putu Berata of the Bali-based gamelan ensemble Cudamani. Live music by Joko Sutrisno and the IPAAM Gamelan Ensemble and a south Indian orchestra led by vocalist Nirmala Rajasekar. Featuring Aparna Ramaswamy and the dancers from Ragamala.The performance is commissioned by the Walker Art Center.

Aviette and No Wait Wait CD Release Party

Aviette, featuring lead singer Holly Muñoz ’02, celebrates the release of their new CD, “No Wait Wait.” Enjoy a performance of selected songs from the band’s new disc and enjoy performances by Glad Version and Jason Shannon ’01. All attendees are eligible for entry into a raffle for CDs, screen-printed posters and meat.

Ben Connelly ’92 concert in Madison

Hot off his release party “Over You” at the Varsity (Minneapolis) on Sept. 25, Minneapolis singer/songwriter Ben Connelly ’92 begins a nationwide tour performing with Make Shift Ego in Madison, Wis. "Ben Connelly's music is intimate in sound and universal in message...profound and humbling," according to a recent article in Minneapolis/St. Paul Magazine. The Current, Minnesota Public Radio’s music station, broadcast his performance on Sept. 28 at Gluek’s in Minneapolis.
