Will democracy Survive?
It’s a widely affirmed ideal, but is democracy possible in today’s world? Or will economic realities, historic cultural clashes, terrorism and other crises overwhelm democratic initiatives? What are democracy’s costs and benefits?
July 22 - July 25, 2012
Democracy has always been an inspiring ideal, a contested political theory,
and a complex system of practices resulting in an array of consequences.
Challenges to the realization of democracy are global in scope, yet locally
specific. I hope you can join me and a select group of Macalester faculty and alumni for a 2½-day discussion of democracy, in which they will share their personal experience, professional expertise, and thoughtful perspectives on democracy’s promise and perils.
