Reykjavik International Film Festival September 29 - October 3, 2014
Macalester College alumni and friends are invited to join Star Tribune film critic Colin Covert ’74 in Iceland for the Reykjavik International Film Festival (RIFF) and an opportunity to explore this gorgeous and unique country. RIFF highlights independent filmmaking from all over the world with an emphasis on up-and-coming filmmakers, and is a wonderful way to explore films that may never find their way to the United States.
5 days for $1,045 (does not include airfare)
Limited to 20 alumni and friends of Macalester College
Day 1, September 29
Meet at the Fosshotel Baron, Reykjavik
Join your fellow Macites at the Fosshotel Baron in Reykjavik, our home base for the week. A van from the airport will be available for travelers arriving in the morning and breakfast will be ready at the hotel. The whole group will gather that evening at Tapas Husio for community and a unique Spanish-Icelandic tapas dinner.
Day 2, September 30
Each guest will receive a pass to the Reykjavik International Film Festival (RIFF), which screens approximately 100 feature films from roughly 40 countries each year. Spend the day exploring films from a variety of categories, including Icelandic Panorama (Icelandic flimmaking), A Different Tomorrow (“films that make us better citizens of the world”), documentaries, emerging masters and more. We will gather as a group in the afternoon for a screening together (TBD) with Star Tribune film critic Colin Covert ’74, followed by a casual dinner and discussion.
Day 3, October 1
Golden Circle Tour
We will spend the day exploring Iceland’s most stunning sights on the Golden Circle Tour, including the Geysir geothermal area, the Gulfloss waterfall, Thingvellir National Park, and Frioheimar greenhouse cultivation center. The evening is open to explore RIFF and Reykjavik on your own.
Day 4, October 2
Mac in the City
Continue to take in RIFF films during the day, then join Icelandic alumni for a Mac in the City gathering in the evening (location TBD). This annual event brings alumni together in over 30 locations across the globe on the same day to reconnect and celebrate our unique Macalester experiences.
Day 5, October 3
Spend one last morning enjoying films at RIFF before heading home.
- Four nights’ accommodations at the Fosshotel Baron
- 9 meals including 5 breakfasts, 1 lunch and 3 dinners
- RIFF passes
- Golden Circle Tour
- Transportation to and from the airport
Please note that this price does not include airfare. As Iceland is an island, they import the vast majority of resources. This is reflected in higher day-to-day expenses.
