Ruth Milanese Lippin '65, known by her Macalester classmates as the one who holds their class together, is April's "Macbassador of the Month."
For the last 15 years, she and her husband Ken have hosted a Holiday Tea for her classmates at their home in St. Paul. When the college announced its new Summer Session series for alumni in 2007, she organized a "65 turns 65" weekend in conjunction with the event to encourage her class to participate in the program.
"I lived at home when I went to Macalester and didn't have a car. I met people in class, but didn't get to go to many evening activities. I thought, 'If I ever want to get to know these people, it is really up to me,'" Ruth said. "The Class of 1965 is really a phenomenal group of people. We have a tremendous amount of respect for each other. Because of it, there's a great deal of freedom when we talk with each other. I may not have known my classmates well in college, but now I do know them and feel deeply connected to them."
This year, she is serving on her class's 45-year Reunion committee. When the Annual Fund's reunion giving coordinator Anthony Begon announced that the first committee to reach 100 percent participation in giving would win a chocolate fountain for their class gathering, Ruth rapidly organized her committee. They won fountain rights within 24 hours.
Ruth is a consistent donor to the Annual Fund. "I, and many of my classmates, would not have been able to attend Macalester without the financial aid we received from the college," she said. "I want to help make a Macalester education possible for qualified students of modest financial means and I know that the Annual Fund plays an important part in providing that aid. Mac gave me the skills to become the person I am today and I am forever grateful."
Join us in congratulating Ruth for being selected as Macalester Macbassador of the Month.
