In recognition of his role as the primary sports photographer for Macalester and his dependable financial support as a Summit Society member, Chris Mitchell '01 is September's Macbassador of the month.
Chris played junior varsity men's soccer at Mac and also participated in the basketball and ultimate Frisbee intramural teams. He majored in political science and went on to earn a master's degree in public policy from the University of Minnesota. He now works at the Institute for Local Self-Reliance where he is director of the organization's "telecommunications as commons" initiative. Chris was recognized by Government Technology magazine as a 2012 Top 25 Doer, Dreamer & Drivers in Public Sector Innovation for his work protecting and advocating for community broadband.
"There are two main motivations for why I want to help Mac. The first is that I want to give back because the college played a key role in shaping how I understand the world and how I can act within it." Chris says. "But, when it comes to my photography, my ongoing motivation comes from the great coaches, staff, and students in the athletic office. I think they deserve recognition and a record for their dedication."
If you see a photo of a Macalester game that happened in the last decade, it was probably taken by Chris. "We have always had great action photos, better than most small colleges, and Chris's skills have been a wonderful asset for us," says Andy Johnson, sports information director for Macalester.
