In recognition of his leadership pioneering Macalester's first "hackathon," as well as his exemplary volunteer service for the college, Per von Zelowitz '94 is 2013's first Macbassador of the Month.
At Mac, Per double majored in environmental studies and economics, played on the intramural rugby team, and spun records for WMCN. Since graduation, Per has consistently volunteered his time and talent, serving on his reunion planning committees and as Alumni Board President. Today, he is a Macalester trustee and an Annual Fund Class Agent.
The founder and CEO of +n, a mobile software business, Per is now bringing his passion for entrepreneurial technology to Macalester in the form of a 24-hour competition called Macathon. Modeled after tech-focused "hackathon" competitions, the Macathon invites Macalester students to put their "liberal arts education into action to invent a new product or service (website, interactive application, mobile app…) that solves a real-world and relevant problem or is just flat-out cool.” Eleven teams have registered to compete over a 24-hour period starting Friday, Feb. 8. Winning teams will receive cash prizes and the opportunity for detailed feedback from successful alumni entrepreneurs, technologists, and investors.
"Education is the critical asset and differentiator," explains Per. "The right education is the most leverage-able asset as it can influence or create leaders who literally have the opportunity to change the world. There are few other opportunities that enable this as effectively as an education and few institutions that do this as well as Mac. Mac helped teach me thinking and understanding and introduced me to some fantastic lifelong friends. For this I am always grateful, and I'm excited to help develop the institution to provide opportunities for others." When asked why he stays connected to the Mac community, Per responds, "Because Mac people are simply awesome: smart, fun, engaged, energetic, unique."
Join us in congratulating Per Von Zelowitz '94, our January Macbassador of the Month.
