Or view our arts calendar and see the vibrant arts events taking place across campus this fall. From a Theatre and Dance Department production of Cabaret to the fall dance concert, and from the New Music Series to student ensemble performances, there's something for everyone.

A phased renovation and expansion of the Janet Wallace Fine Arts Center underscores the vital contributions the arts make to Macalester. Phase one includes Music along with the Arts Commons and is the current focus of capital fundraising for the Step Forward campaign.

"We are uniquely poised to make a critical investment in the arts at a time when many colleges are pulling back because of the economy. By moving forward now, Macalester can enhance its fine arts programming, which is core to the liberal arts, and better serve our students," Murray explains.

Fundraising is currently at $16 million toward a $24 million goal for the first phase of this project, which includes a new gallery, the music building and concert hall, and a new arts commons gathering space. If fundraising continues on track, the college hopes to break ground in January 2011.

Scots Watch: Volleyball & Men's Soccer

Logo: Mac Athletics

Highlighted by a men's soccer win over national power Loras (Ia.), the Macalester athletic teams are off to a good start this fall sports season. Fresh off that victory over Loras, the Scots have moved into the No. 7 spot in the first NCAA Division III poll of the year (more) and No. 1 in the North Region poll. All-conference midfielder Stephen Murphy-Logue '11 headed in a crossing pass from teammate Erik Johnson '11 for the game's only goal and the Scots held on for the 1-0 decision. Coach Ian Barker's team is a perfect 3-0 for the young season and hasn't allowed a goal.

New coach Annie Doman and the volleyball team are off to a nice beginning as well, with a 4-1 record. The Scots beat Crown College in Doman's Macalester debut and then went 3-1 at the St. Olaf Invitational. Majra Mucic '11 and Steffanie Fisher '13 were named to the all-tourney team at St. Olaf.

Kate Havelin '83 is September's Macbassador of the month.

Kate Havelin '83 is September's Macbassador of the month. For the last four years she has volunteered as a first-year dinner host, inviting a professor's class into her home for an evening of conversation. Next month she is hosting dinner for Professor John Kim's first-year class, "Screens." Kate gives regularly to Macalester's Annual Fund, helping ensure that all students receive an excellent Macalester education. She also co-chaired her class's 25-Year Reunion in 2008 and was on her class's reunion committee for her three previous reunions.

Why does Kate do so much for her alma mater? "Mac helped shape me into the person I am now," she says. "I'm happy to have the chance to help others benefit from Macalester."
