College News
In the fall of 2007, Macalester welcomed 485 students to the Class of 2011. Sixty-eight percent of those students were in the top 10 percent of their graduating class and 41 were National Merit Scholars. As Macalester students, they have excelled in the many projects they have taken on. Congratulations Class of 2011! Senior Class Gift honors faculty & staff
This year's graduating seniors have upheld the long-standing tradition of showing gratitude to their college by contributing to their senior class gift. So far, 48 percent of the Class of 2011 has contributed, raising $12,233 for the Annual Fund in honor of 173 faculty, staff, loved ones, and others who have been important in their Macalester experiences. The senior class is only 30 donors away from breaking the senior class gift participation record of 54 percent held by the Class of 2009. Everyone is welcome to join the Class of 2011 in making gifts to the Annual Fund in honor of others. All donors and honorees of gifts made by May 31, the end of Macalester's fiscal year, will be listed in the annual Honor Roll of Donors. Blast from the past: Flag-rush canceled
Did you know that class rivalries were once so heated at Macalester that the college had to cancel the long-standing flag-rush because it had become too violent? (Sources: Macalester College Bulletin, October 1914, Vol. 3 No. 1; and The Mac Weekly, October 6, 1914.) Find out what replaced it and see what else was happening on campus almost 100 years ago. Search The Mac Weekly and other historic Mac newspapers in our online archives. Digitization of The College Echo and the Macalester Bulletin was financed in part with funds provided by the State of Minnesota through the Minnesota Historical Society from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund. Scots Watch: The Janis Rider '88 Invitational
Macalester formally dedicated its annual women's track & field invitational to the memory of assistant track & field coach and M Club Hall of Fame athlete Janis Rider ’88 on April 30. Coach Rider passed away unexpectedly August 23, 2010, while vacationing in Hawaii. The Scots placed third out of nine teams at the meet. Tara McCoy '11 and Robin Major '11 placed first and third, respectively, in the 800-meter run (first and second among collegiate entrants). McCoy crossed the finish line in 2:14.84 and Major was right behind with a 2:16.34 time. Ana Armitage '14 was runner-up out of 33 sprinters in the 200-meter dash with a mark of 25.70 and Alexa Simpson '13 was eighth with a 26.48 clocking. Also placing second was Holly Schiedermayer '12 in the high jump with a mark of 5-2 1/4.
Reunion 2011 features alumni celebration
One of the highlights of Reunion 2011 will be the celebration of this year's Alumni Awards winners at Saturday morning's kick-off event, Breakfast with Brian. The winners were nominated by their peers and selected by the Nominations Committee of the Alumni Board. 2011 Alumni Award Winners (read profiles) Reunion 2011 is Friday-Sunday, June 3-5. So far, more than 970 people have registered to attend and there is still time to sign up! The final deadline for online registration is Monday, May 30. Alumni trip to Peru planned for November
Alumni are invited to join Macalester professors Cynthia Kauffeld and Adrienne Christiansen for an 11-day tour of Peru Nov. 21-Dec. 1. The group will learn about the distant past and encounter the fascinating present of a country rich in archaeological, cultural, and natural treasures. Our small group will take in some of the country's highlights including Cuzco, Machu Picchu, and Lake Titicaca as we marvel at the riches of an intriguing land off the beaten path. Space is limited for this unique travel experience. To find out more, email Gabrielle Lawrence '73. Alumni showcased in City Pages "2011 Best Of" Awards
Every year the alternative Twin Cities newsweekly City Pages runs an issue full of its "Best of Awards." Many Mac alumni and their businesses were recognized in the 2011 edition, including Wet Paint (Best Art Supply Store, Beth Bergman '73, owner); St. Paul Cheese Shop (Best Cheese Shop, Benjamin Roberts '99, manager); Common Roots Café (Best Bagels, Danny Schwartzman '04, owner); The Trylon (Best Movie Theater, Barry Kryshka '93, executive director); Surly Brewing Company (Best Local Beer, Surly Abrasive Ale, Omar Ansari '92, owner); and Mixed Blood Theatre actress and Playwrights' Center playwright Aditi Kapil '94 (Best Local Girl Made Good). Macbassador of the Month:
May's Macbassador of the Month is George Bonniwell '61, a role model for all Macalester alumni volunteers, who found one of the few remaining copies of the Class of 1961 first-year class photo. George signs up to help whenever he can and always comes through with quiet, effective leadership and good humor. George is a member of the Alumni Board and is an active member of the board's Nominations and Student Support committees. Throughout the years, he has participated in planning nearly all of his class's reunions, and is currently the co-chair of the Class of 1961 50-Year Reunion Program Committee. His enthusiasm for volunteering for Mac is contagious; he convinced his wife Charlotte Yost Bonniwell '62 to volunteer for her 50th as well. George and Charlotte are Scot Society members, helping Macalester maintain its high-quality educational resources and provide financial aid to students. They have given to Macalester's Annual Fund nearly every year since 1972. George is a familiar sight on campus because he rarely misses an opportunity to return for faculty lectures, Alumni Board programs for students, and the annual Alumni College Summer Session. Join us in congratulating George in being MacBassador of the Month.
