Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship in its 11th year
Encouraging minority students to earn PhDs is the goal of the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship (MMUF) program, now in its 30th year and its 11th year at Macalester. "We’re trying to get students of color on track to become professors," says Mellon faculty coordinator and history professor Peter Rachleff. "The ultimate goal is to diversify the pool of faculty out there." Proof that the program works is borne out right here on campus: Three current Mac professors are MMUF alumni: Duchess Harris, American studies; Alicia Munoz, Hispanic studies; and Karin Velez, history. Professorship in global health established Wesley and Lynn Edens of New York have established a $2 million endowed professorship that will be named the Edens Professorship in Global Health. "We are excited by the opportunity to fund an initiative like this," Wes and Lynn say. “Global health is a topic of great interest to us, and there is an urgent need in higher education to prepare today’s students to address these challenges. We are delighted to be working with Macalester to advance that effort." The new professorship's first appointment will be in health and medical geography, a field that includes topics ranging from infectious diseases to health care delivery systems to environmental health hazards. Blast to the Past: Students and Civil Rights
Half a century has passed since the Civil Rights movement seized the nation's attention. What were Macalester students doing to improve race relations during that era? One student effort was an exchange program between Mac and two historically black Southern colleges, Knoxville and Morehouse. Between 1962 and '68, approximately 50 students participated in the program. An article in an upcoming issue of Mac Today will explore the memories of these Macites. A special reunion for these exchange students, their roommates, and professors, is in the works for 2012. If you were involved in this program, please email Janice Dickinson '64 at alumnioffice@macalester.edu with your name and contact information so we can tell you more as plans are made. David Melms '13 makes Good Works Team
Macalester corner back David Melms '13 is one of 22 college football players nationwide from all divisions selected for the 2011 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®, one of the most prestigious off-the-field honors in college football. Team members are selected for their dedication to improving the lives of others and for their academic standing. You can vote for Melms to be the Good Works team captain at ESPN.com. Melms was named to the team for being a community service leader since arriving at Macalester in 2009. He is creating a program in the Twin Cities called "Stand Out" to give youth a wide array of fun alternatives to drugs and alcohol. He also founded Macalester's chapter of Fellowship of Christian Athletes and has organized multiple service projects on behalf of the student organization. In 2010, he helped lead his team to its first winning season in 24 years and was tied for the team lead in interceptions.
Hosts needed for January Exploreships
Calling all alumni in New York City, D.C., and the Twin Cities! This January, provide a current sophomore with the chance to explore your world of work. Through Macalester's Career Exploreship program, sponsored by the Alumni Board and the Internship Program, Macalester students will be matched with alumni in these three cities for informational interviews, one-day job-shadows, or three-day "on the job" experiences. This program gives students the chance to connect with alumni and learn more about fields they are interested in and, most importantly, about the path your life has taken since Mac. If you are interested in hosting an Exploreship student at your workplace this January, please sign up. If you have any questions about the program, please contact Anne Hoyt Taff '04 in the alumni office at ataff@macalester.edu or 651-696-6209. Alumni invited to play Reunion 2012
Reunion 2012, happening Friday-Sunday, June 1-3, again will include MacFest, an outdoor concert of alumni bands and musicians. All interested alumni musicians, regardless of class year, are invited to apply. The deadline is Thursday, March 8, 2012. Macbassador of the Month:
Beth Bergman '73, owner of the popular Grand Avenue art store Wet Paint, is October's Macbassador of the Month. This fall, Beth welcomed Macalester students into her home as a host for the Alumni Board's first-year dinner program, providing the students with a fun and informal way to connect with the alumni community. "I have a daily relationship with Macalester," says Beth, whose business is a block from the college, "and I love to cook, so I feel like I'm hardly doing anything outside of ordinary when cooking dinner for the students." Beth has also served on several of her class's Reunion committees and helped stage alumni art exhibits on campus. Beth was drawn to Macalester "for the opportunity to be part of life-changing volunteering experiences." Her first gift of $20 in 1973 and continued support of the Annual Fund as a Scots Society member has ensured that today's Macalester students have similar enriching experiences.
