Thank you for Stepping Forward
Step Forward donors are invited to celebrate the campaign's successes at regional "thank you" events. The first celebration is in Phoenix on Thursday, Jan. 19. The upcoming celebrations will be held in Seattle (Thursday, Jan. 26), San Francisco (Friday, Jan. 27), Los Angeles (Saturday, Jan. 28), Chicago (Feb. 21), London (March 15), New York City (March 27), Washington, D.C. (March 29), and Boston (March 30). Twin Cities alumni will celebrate the conclusion of the campaign at four events for these class-year ranges: 1950s and earlier (the morning of April 26), 1960s and 1970s (April 18), 1980s and 1990s (Feb. 3) and 2000s (the evening of April 26). Blast from the Past: Nixon's 1960 visit
Media coverage of the Republican primaries and caucuses remind us of past Republican candidates for president who have visited Macalester. On September 17, 1960, Vice President Richard Nixon spoke at the Macalester Fieldhouse for a "Nixon for President" rally organized in part by Macalester’s Republican Club. Although Nixon lost the 1960 presidential race to John F. Kennedy, a post-election issue of The Mac Weekly points out that Nixon would have won by a landslide if the Macalester students of the time were the sole electors; Nixon received 626 votes from the Macalester student body, whereas Kennedy only received 218.
Will today's Republican student group convince their favorite presidential hopeful to visit Mac in 2012? Only time will tell.

Macalester track & field alumni are gathering for the 4th annual Alumni Track Meet from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 21, in the Leonard Center Fieldhouse. Participants will compete in field and running events. Everyone is welcome to come and cheer some of Mac's former student athletes. For more information, email Martin Peper at peper@macalester.edu.
Henry West to teach alumni about ancient philosophy
More than 50 alumniand Mac neighbors have signed up to learn about Ancient Philosophy with Professor Henry West this February. Professor West will highlight some of the most important ideas of ancient Greek philosophers. The format will be informal and discussion-oriented. The four sessions will cover The Pre-Socratics and Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, and The Stoics and Epicureans. The group will meet Tuesdays from 7:30-9 a.m. There is no cost to participate in this no-credit crash course. All Macalester alumni are welcome to attend, but registration is required.
Annual Fund hosts "Thank-a-thon"
All day today, January 19, Macalester Annual Fund volunteers, including alumni, staff, faculty, and students, are calling donors to thank them for giving during the Step Forward campaign. If you are among the 65 percent of alumni who supported Mac during the historic three-year campaign, we thank you for your generosity. Mac students enriched by Exploreships
Macalester students are gaining valuable insight and meaningful experience this month thanks to alumni in the Twin Cities, New York City, and D.C. who have volunteered to host sophomores through our Exploreship job-shadowing program this January. We've been receiving many positive reports from students about their experiences, including this one from Marta LeFevre-Levy '14 who shadowed Chris Jandro '04, a middle and high school biology teacher at Avalon School in St. Paul.
These alumni have recently posted class notes in MacDirect, our online community for alumni (login to view): Erin DeRuggiero '96 What's your news? Post a note and your name will appear in the next edition of Mac Wire.
