More than 60 percent of Class of 2012 contributes to Senior Class Gift

2012 Senior Class Gift - Reach out. Step Forward. Give Back.

At the beginning of their senior send-off and champagne toast, the Class of 2012 was two gifts away from clearing the 60 percent participation mark in their Senior Class Gift—a week after blowing through the Class of 2009's record of 54 percent.

President Brian Rosenberg thanked the class for their generosity at the event and issued a challenge. He would give the beaded necklaces he recently wore at the Kentucky Derby (story below) to the next two seniors to donate. Without missing a beat, two men stood up, approached the stage, and handed him some cash they had in their pockets. The Class of 2012 reached its 60 percent mark to thunderous applause, hoots, and hollers.

Macalester's fiscal year ends Thursday, May 31. Alumni, how will your class participation compare?

Mac goes to the Derby

Dullahan sporting his Macalester pride with owner Jerry Crawford '71.

President Brian Rosenberg attended the Kentucky Derby with horse owner, Macalester trustee, and chair of the Step Forward campaign Jerry Crawford '71. In his never-ending support for his alma mater, Crawford had a Macalester cooler, or cloak, made for his horse Dullahan. A photo of Jerry and his horse along with the actual Macalester cooler were put on display in the campus center during Commencement weekend. Dullahan came in third place in the race.

Meet a few of our recent grads

The Class of 2012 will no doubt go on to make changes in the world. Four of these newly minted Mac alumni— Ann Stromgren, Kaitlin Roh, Keith Armstrong, and Tyler Martinson—will spend next year as Fulbright Scholars. Sociology majors Jeremy Carp and Diego Melo were selected as the first and second place winners, respectively, of the 2012 Alpha Kappa Delta Undergraduate Paper Competition. Charlotte Fagan received both a Davis Project for Peace grant and a Watson Fellowship. Derek Ochi was named one of 100 Amgen Fellows selected from incoming Teach For America Corps members with undergraduate degrees in math and science. Find out where some others in the class are headed by checking out this list. Recent grads: Tell us what you plan to do next by posting a note in MacDirect.

Chips off the old block

Pictured left are James Ochi '80, Derek Ochi '12, and Shigeru Ochi '49. Pictured right in the front row are Howard Huelster '49, Nicholas Huelster '12, Anne Lynch (his mom), and standing are Mary MacDonald Huelster '47, Holly Huelster (sister), Ross Huelster '79.

At Mac, we call our families with multiple generations of alumni our "Chips" as in the expression "Chips off the old block." Two remarkable Chips families attended at Commencement 2012—the Huelsters and the Ochis. The grandfathers of both families, Shigeru and Howard, were classmates at Macalester, graduating in 1949. We congratulate these families for their latest alumni additions, Derek Ochi '12 and Nicholas Huelster '12.

Macbassador of the Month: Rita Reynolds Gehrenbeck '57

When Rita Reynolds Gehrenbeck '57 P'85 '87 arrived at Macalester in 1953, she had never been outside the tri-state area of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa. "But by the end of four years, my life's vision took in the world," she says, "and I thank Mac for that."

Perhaps that's why, when the former Providence, R.I., reading specialist—who also worked in Lebanon for two years—moved back to the Twin Cities, she threw herself so wholeheartedly into volunteering for her alma mater. Gehrenbeck has served on the last three Class of 1957 Reunion committees, including serving as co-chair for this year's 55-year Reunion; she is serving her second term on the Alumni Board; and she is a class agent.

And that's not counting the many alumni events she has attended over the years, her regular volunteering as a host family for international students; or her multiple decades of support to the Annual Fund (a Grand Society member since 2002, she’s a Wallace Society member as well).

That's a lot of Macalester involvement, but she's happy to do it all. Says Gehrenbeck, "Now that I have more time to give, I'm so rewarded by the wonderful staff, students, faculty, and alumni with whom I've participated in these events. Thank you for the honor of serving."
