Professor William Moseley wins Media Achievement Award
Professor William Moseley received the Association of American Geographers (AAG) Media Achievement Award, an honor conferred in recognition of exceptional and outstanding accomplishments in publicizing geographical insights in media of general or mass communication. "Over the past few years, no academic geographer has used the media more effectively to bring the insights of geographical scholarship to the general public than Professor William G. Moseley," the award citation says. "Driven by a desire to raise public awareness of issues ranging from poverty and hunger in Africa to environmental degradation to the vulnerabilities of American industrial agriculture, Professor Moseley has written wide ranging, thought-provoking opinion pieces in influential newspapers ranging from The New York Times and the International Herald Tribune to The Christian Science Monitor and the San Francisco Chronicle. He has also been interviewed on major radio and television stations, including the BBC and the Voice of America. Through his efforts, Professor Moseley has helped countless readers and listeners think about the world in a richer, more geographically informed way." Moseley will be recognized at the AAG's annual meeting in Los Angeles on April 13, 2013. Women’s hoops off to good start
Despite losing four starters from last year’s team to graduation, the Macalester women’s basketball team is off to a good start heading into the three-week holiday break. The Scots, under eight-year head coach Ellen Thompson, have come out on top in three out of their five Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) games, picking up wins over St. Olaf, St. Catherine, and Augsburg. Point guard Kyanna Jones '13 (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) leads the Scots in scoring (13.0), rebounding (6.9), steals (3.6), and assists (3.1), and is ranked in the top 10 in the MIAC in each of these statistical categories. Jones registered her first career double-double in the victory over the Auggies, finishing with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Jones is the team’s only returning starter from last year. Others in the starting lineup are Taylor Pike '14 (Ashland, Neb.), Veronika Jakubovie '14 (Maple Grove, Minn.), Emma Leyden '14 (Berkeley, Calif.), and Kathryn Medinger '14 (Sitka, Alaska). Annual Fund closes in on 2012 goals
Macalester supporters are making a difference in the lives of our students. Last December, 2,611 donors gave a total of $590,033 to the Annual Fund, and this month the college is on track to exceed last December's totals due to our generous alumni, parents, faculty, staff and friends. These new or renewing donors will help the college meet its calendar year-end goals and keep on track for its overall fiscal year objectives. Gifts to the Annual Fund support students, whether they’re taking final exams this week, trying out their first internship over winter break, or starting a new semester next month.
Volunteers needed for Macalester Alumni Reader Project Thanks to more than 100 alumni who volunteered in the pilot launch of Macalester's Alumni Reader Project (MARP), 65 students were matched with alumni readers for fall semester. In the spring, four new faculty members in their first or second year of teaching at Mac are participating in MARP. We are currently looking for readers for the following courses:
Volunteer readers will enjoy a glimpse into real academic work happening on campus today, as well as get acquainted with a new faculty member. Participating students will receive constructive feedback that assists them both at Macalester and in their professional life. This program is a joint effort of Alumni Relations and the Jan Serie Center for Scholarship and Teaching.

In recognition of her active service both in the Boston alumni chapter and as a member of the Alumni of Color Reunion planning committee, Jey Moon '08 is December's Macbassador of the Month. A theatre major and former RA, Moon now works as a supervisor at Children's Hospital in Boston. She has helped the Boston alumni chapter plan two successful annual MAC in the City events. As a member of the Alumni of Color Reunion planning committee, she is encouraging young alumni of color and her Class of '08 classmates to attend Reunion 2013 happening June 7-9. In addition to counting on Moon as a volunteer, Macalester counts on her automated monthly Sustainer gifts which help provide for the life-changing experiences of today's students. Engaging with the Boston Alumni Chapter helped Moon make connections in a new city and stay connected to her college. "The interactions I had with my classmates and close friends were always engaging and challenged me in many ways," said Moon. "It is something I had hoped to have after graduation, which drew me to Mac's Boston alumni chapter. We are such a diverse group that it's always fun to get together and hang out." Join us in congratulating Jey Moon, our December Macbassador of the Month. These alumni have recently posted class notes in MacDirect, our online community for alumni (login to view):
