Studio Art construction begins
The large construction crane has returned to campus, signifying the beginning of construction on the Janet Wallace Fine Arts Center's Studio Art building. The renovated and expanded facility is scheduled to open in January 2014. President Rosenberg's op-ed makes Star Tribune "most-read" list for 2012
When a presidential candidate made a public jab at the value of higher education, Macalester President Brian Rosenberg took a stand. The Minneapolis Star Tribune published his editorial and recently listed it as one of their most-read opinions in 2012. Sam Frost '13 describes studying in China
Sam Frost '13 writes about his experience studying in China for Macalester's website: "As a Chinese major planning to work in China following graduation, I never intended my study abroad experience to be an extended vacation or some sort of enlightenment episode. My priority was more practical: I wanted to learn to speak Chinese well so I could..." Class of 2012 to celebrate 1-Year Reunion
Graduating from college triggers one of the biggest transitions that faces young people: leaving the "Mac Bubble" and entering the "real world." Because we know that the first year after Mac is a time of great change, we are inviting the Class of 2012 back to campus for a special 1-Year Reunion reception 7 p.m. Friday, June 7, to kick off reunion weekend. It's an opportunity to reconnect, recharge, and celebrate with your Macalester community. Save the dates: June 7-9. Registration opens in March. Alumni College Summer Session announced
The 6th annual Alumni College Summer Session will focus on food and sustainability. The three-day session led by Professor Bill Moseley, "Food, Famine, and Farming: Can We Feed the World Sustainably?" will happen July 28-31 on campus. Participants will explore a variety of topics surrounding this issue including agroecology, American agriculture, the role of food drives in addressing hunger, American food policy, and demands on food production. Registration is now open, enrollment is limited. Macbassador of the Month: Per von Zelowitz '94
In recognition of his leadership pioneering Macalester's first "hackathon," as well as his exemplary volunteer service for the college, Per von Zelowitz '94 is 2013's first Macbassador of the Month. At Mac, Per double majored in environmental studies and economics, played on the intramural rugby team, and spun records for WMCN. Since graduation, Per has consistently volunteered his time and talent, serving on his reunion planning committees and as Alumni Board President. Today, he is a Macalester trustee and an Annual Fund Class Agent. The founder and CEO of +n, a mobile software business, Per is now bringing his passion for entrepreneurial technology to Macalester in the form of a 24-hour competition called Macathon. Modeled after tech-focused "hackathon" competitions, the Macathon invites Macalester students to put their "liberal arts education into action to invent a new product or service (website, interactive application, mobile app…) that solves a real-world and relevant problem or is just flat-out cool.” Eleven teams have registered to compete over a 24-hour period starting Friday, Feb. 8. Winning teams will receive cash prizes and the opportunity for detailed feedback from successful alumni entrepreneurs, technologists, and investors. "Education is the critical asset and differentiator," explains Per. "The right education is the most leverage-able asset as it can influence or create leaders who literally have the opportunity to change the world. There are few other opportunities that enable this as effectively as an education and few institutions that do this as well as Mac. Mac helped teach me thinking and understanding and introduced me to some fantastic lifelong friends. For this I am always grateful, and I'm excited to help develop the institution to provide opportunities for others." When asked why he stays connected to the Mac community, Per responds, "Because Mac people are simply awesome: smart, fun, engaged, energetic, unique." Join us in congratulating Per Von Zelowitz '94, our January Macbassador of the Month. These alumni have recently posted class notes in MacDirect, our online community for alumni (login to view):
