Adobe's Teresa Demel '97 presents the Macalester Today app in a short video and highlights ways in which the iPad version of the magazine expands on the content available in print. Registration for Reunion 2013 is now open

Photo

Registration is now open for Reunion 2013, happening June 7-9. All alumni, faculty, staff, and friends are welcome to join us for the weekend of festivities.

This year, the Classes of 2008; 2003; 1998 & '99; 1988; 1973; 1968; 1963; 1958; and 1953 and earlier are celebrating milestone reunions. The Class of 2012 is also celebrating its 1-Year Reunion.

Macalester Alumni of Color will return to Mac to celebrate the college's diverse history, support its current community of color, and help shape the future narrative. In addition, alumni who participated in Mary Gwen Owen's legendary group, the Drama Choros, will gather to share their stories and perform; and all alumni who were ever student employees of the library are invited to return to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the DeWitt Wallace Library.

It's going to be a great weekend. We look forward to seeing everyone again.

After researching diseases that afflict millions in Africa and beyond, 12 Mac students traveled to Uganda with Professors Devavani Chatterjea, Elizabeth Jansen, and Paul Overvoorde. Alumni invited to send postcards to graduating seniors

Photo

Our Macalester alumni remember what it was like as their last semester at Macalester drew to a close. Graduating from college and entering the "real world" is one of life's largest transitions. In the crazy rush of capstones, finals, travel arrangements, and goodbyes, it’s easy for seniors to forget they are part of a wider Macalester community that will always be a resource for them.

That's why this year we are inviting alumni to offer words of encouragement to the Class of 2013 through a new program called MacMail. From now until May 1, the alumni office will be collecting postcards from alumni around the world with words of encouragement written for a graduating senior. Each graduating senior will receive a random MacMail postcard as they enter their final week of exams. It’s a simple but powerful way to connect with the next generation of alumni and to support our seniors.

Macbassador of the Month: Sarah Puro '99

Photo

In recognition of her continuing support of the college and exemplary volunteer record, Sarah Puro '99 is March's Macbassador of the Month.

Puro, a political science major, holds a master's degree in public policy from the University of Chicago. For nearly a decade she has worked as an analyst for the Congressional Budget Office, where she provides nonpartisan analysis and information to congressional staff and interest groups. Despite her busy career and family life with wife Amanda and their two children, Sarah continues to contribute her time and talent to supporting current Macalester students. In the past six months alone, she has visited campus to speak, provided feedback as a participant in the Macalester Alumni Reader Project, and hosted a student Career Exploreship in Washington, D.C.

Yet, Puro doesn't think her dedication to the college is all that extraordinary. "It doesn't take that much time and it helps students to understand the world outside Macalester a bit more," she says. "When people ask for help, I'm happy to do it if I can. It just seems like what we should do to give back, to help out, to pay forward the help that others have given us."

As a Summit Society donor, Puro has supported the Annual Fund continuously since her senior year at Mac. "I joke with my friends about how I think that liberal arts graduates should take over the world, and I'd like to help them do just that. Supporting Macalester financially and with my time helps to achieve that goal in some small way," she explains. "It is important to me to give back to Macalester, an institution that has been an important part of shaping who I am."

Please join us in congratulating Sarah Puro '99, our Macbassador of the Month.
