Two Mac students named Truman Scholars

Andrew Keefe '13 (left) and Zachary Avre '14 are
2013 Truman Scholars.

Andrew Keefe '13, a senior from Minneapolis double majoring in linguistics and media and cultural studies, and Zachary Avre '14, a junior from Sioux Falls, S.D., majoring in geography, have been named 2013 Truman Scholars. Scholars were elected by independent selection panels on the basis of leadership potential, intellectual ability, and the likelihood of "making a difference." Provide your input for strategic planning

Macalester's strategic planning process is underway, with information gathering sessions happening on campus. As part of this process, we are asking for feedback from alumni and friends of the college. This month's question is one of several questions posed by the Board of Trustees:

What are the distinctive and attractive strengths of Macalester -- both current and potential -- and how can we best build upon and foreground those strengths?

To provide your thoughts on this question and to learn more about the strategic planning process visit our strategic planning website.

MacMail still needs 374 postcards for seniors

Photo

Alumni Relations is currently collecting MacMail, postcards from alumni with words of encouragement, welcome, and congratulations for the newest members of our alumni community.

We've received 159 MacMail postcards so far from members of classes ranging from 1957 to 2011, we need 374 more by Wednesday, May 1. Otherwise none can be delivered this year. (Imagine how awkward it would be in the Student Post Office if only a fraction of our seniors received cards.)

Your MacMail postcard can be as simple as a few sentences, your favorite poem, a drawing, a story about your own post-Mac path, or your best advice for navigating the "real world." It only takes a few minutes to make a difference for a graduating senior. Send in yours today!

Macbassador of the Month:
Broderick Grubb '73

Photo

In recognition of his service on the Alumni Board, the Alumni of Color Reunion Committee, and the Class of 1973 Reunion Committee, Broderick Grubb '73 is April's Macbassador of the Month.

Grubb, a Mac political science and economics double major, lives in his hometown of New Orleans. Despite the considerable distance and drastic change in temperature, Grubb has traveled back to Mac four times since October to attend Alumni Board and Reunion committee meetings.

He cites three reasons for serving on the Alumni Board and two Reunion committees: Meeting and making new friends who share similar ideas; reconnecting with the the college and his memories from his time as a Mac student; and giving back to "an institution that has been responsible for so much good that has happened in my life."

In addition to his generous contributions of time and talent, Grubb is a member of the Grand Society, the Summit Society, and the James Wallace Society, as well as a steward of the El-Kati Lectureship. "I support the College financially because the financial support of many people afforded me with the opportunity to attend Mac," said Grubb. "It is my time to pay it forward."

Grubb is particularly motivated to stay connected to the community because, he says, "Students of color, with the support of the administration, were able to persuade members of the Board of Trustees that diversity at Macalester was a good thing and should be supported by the college. I want to make certain that the college continues to seek out and support academically talented students and that students of color are included in that number."

Please join us in congratulating Broderick Grubb '73 for being April's Macbassador of the Month.
