Giving to Annual Fund sets record

The Annual Fund closed a successful fiscal year on May 31 and set a new record by raising more than $3.7 million, which is $82,000 higher than this year’s goal and $300,000 more than last year's total. The total number of Annual Fund donors also increased, while the alumni participation rate remained constant at 38 percent.

Overall giving totaled $13.7 million from 12,143 donors. That total includes more than $3 million directed toward the studio art renovation and expansion in the Janet Wallace Fine Arts Center. To date, the college has raised more than $6.7 million of the $7.5 million goal for the project.

We thank all of our donors for their continuing support.

Art of Mary Griep '73 returns to campus

Photo

The work of noted artist and St. Olaf College professor Mary Griep '73 was displayed in the Law Warschaw Gallery of the Janet Wallace Fine Arts Center along with that of Patricia Olson '73 and Rafael Francisco Salas '95 in an exhibition called "Our Visible World."

The pieces are a conversation among three alumni from two generations who have gone on to careers as educators and painters exploring the representational tradition. The three artists also took part in a June 8 discussion, moderated by curator Greg Fitz '99.

Griep, who has recently specialized in renderings of large-scale architectural work, was also commissioned to create three drawings of key campus buildings for the remodeled Alumni House. She chose to depict unconventional views of Old Main, Markim Hall, and Weyerhaeuser Chapel.

Provide your input for strategic planning

Photo

Help shape the future of Macalester by providing feedback for strategic planning. The Board of Trustees has provided seven framing questions to help structure the planning process. This month's question is about career preparation.

Without diminishing our core commitment to a liberal arts education, how can we best ensure that students are also receiving sound preparation for rewarding and successful careers?

Please share your thoughts on this question or any of the other questions found on the strategic planning website.

Macbassador of the Month:
Shelley Carthen Watson '82

Photo

In recognition of her exemplary volunteer history and support of both alumni and students of color at Macalester, Shelley Carthen Watson '82 is our Macbassador of the Month for June.

Watson has served in a wide variety of leadership roles at the college, including serving on the Board of Trustees, the Alumni Board, and four Reunion planning committees, as well as on this year's Alumni of Color Reunion planning committee. She is an active host parent for the Alumni of Color Host Family Program, where she mentors first-year students of color at Macalester. She also is a loyal financial supporter of the college.

"Macalester was a life-changing experience for me, in great part because of alumni, and I want to do my part in providing that experience for future students, particularly students of color," says Watson, "whether it be by engaging alumni of color, raising funds for financial aid, connecting students with mentors, or helping with recruiting."

Please join us in congratulating Shelley Carthen Watson '82, our June Macbassador of the Month.
