The Board of Trustees has elected two new trustees: Dr. Patricia Elizabeth Hume '92, a physician at the San Francisco Free Clinic in San Francisco, and Aukse Jurkute '98, an investment banker for Bank of America Merrill Lynch in London.

Jimm Crowder retires

Jimm Crowder, right, recruited many of Macalester's international students.

After 25 years working as director of international admissions at Macalester, Jimm Crowder retired from the college this summer. He was instrumental in developing a comprehensive international recruitment program that is widely considered a model for American colleges and universities.

Through the years, many of the college’s international students, including Alumni Award winner Carolina Duarte Bradpiece '86 and Rhodes scholar Keon West '06, were introduced to Macalester by Crowder.

West met Crowder in Jamaica, where he was speaking to high school students. "The atmosphere of the school and the personality came across from Jimm," West says, "That's what made me want to apply."

Please join us in thanking Jimm Crowder for his service to Macalester.

Provide your input for strategic planning

Help shape the future of Macalester by providing feedback for strategic planning. The Board of Trustees has provided seven framing questions to help structure the planning process. This month's question is about the residential experience.

Given the costs of providing a residential college experience at a time when higher education is becoming increasingly nonresidential, what steps should be taken to assess, maximize, and promote the personal and intellectual benefits of that experience?

Please share your thoughts on this question or any of the other questions found on the strategic planning website.

Hunger Games: The course

Archery lessons in a college class? That’s just one of several unusual aspects to American studies professor Karin Aguilar-San Juan’s new course, "The Hunger Games: Map and Mirror for the 21st Century."

In the course, students read all three books in the popular series and watched the first film and then used The Hunger Games as the catalyst for a series of serious conversations about war, revolution, global inequality, environmentalism, reality TV, gender/sexuality, and the power of love. Throughout the semester, students developed and employed a language that helped to reveal the significance of race and other protofascist formations in the fictional world of Panem.

Macbassador of the Month:
Martha Truax '07

In recognition of her dedication as an Annual Fund class agent and for being one of the first to sign up as a Grand Society member through our new program for young alumni leadership giving, Martha Truax '07 is our Macbassador of the Month for July.

Truax, a media and cultural studies major at Mac, is director of annual giving for Augsburg College. Despite her day job in fundraising, Truax is also a committed volunteer for Macalester's Annual Fund and has served as a class agent for the past three years.

"Going to school at Mac was an amazing, life-changing experience. Hands down, it was the best decision I’ve ever made," she says. "I'm proud to be an Annual Fund donor because the world needs more Macalester graduates. I know how important it is for the college to have flexible support that can be used wherever need is greatest, and that Macalester, its students, and its alumni, are doing amazing things that change the world."

Please join us in congratulating Martha Truax '07, July's Macbassador of the Month.
