Big catch by Konnor Fleming '15
makes big waves

Macalester students are known for going to extremes to make our world a better place. Mac football player Konnor Fleming '15 recently demonstrated this value at the 12th annual Travis Roy Foundation Wiffle Ball tournament at Little Fenway Park in Jericho, Vermont.

A YouTube video of his dramatic game-ending catch has been viewed more than 730,000 times on YouTube and has been seen on ESPN Sports Center's Top-10 Plays, Good Morning America, MLB on Fox, Yahoo's homepage feature rotation, and CNN. Our favorite coverage of it, however, is this post by alumnus Howard Sinker '78 on the Star Tribune Sports blog.

The Travis Roy Foundation raised more than $500,000 during the Wiffle Ball Tournament to benefit and increase awareness for people with spinal cord injuries. Konnor's daring feat of valor is bringing even more attention to the organization and its mission.

Car Country by Professor Chris Wells published

For most people in the United States, going almost anywhere begins with reaching for the car keys. This is true, argues Environmental Studies Professor Christopher Wells in his new book, because the United States is a car country: a nation dominated by landscapes that are difficult, inconvenient, and often even unsafe to navigate unless you're sitting behind the wheel of a car.

Provide your input for strategic planning

Help shape the future of Macalester by providing feedback for strategic planning. The Board of Trustees has provided seven framing questions to help structure the planning process. This month's question is about increasing quality and efficiency through collaboration.

How can better collaboration and cooperation -- both within Macalester and between Macalester and other colleges, businesses, and organizations -- help increase the quality and efficiency of our work?

Please share your thoughts on this question or any of the other questions found on the strategic planning website.

MAC in the City 2013 is Thursday, Oct. 3

MAC in the City, an annual can't-miss alumni event, is happening on Thursday, Oct. 3 in cities worldwide. It is an opportunity for alumni, whether new to a region or lifelong residents, to meet each other, reflect on their shared experiences cultivated by their Macalester education, and share insights about their city's resources.

So far we have events planned in more than 20 cities, including St. Paul and Minneapolis. If your city is not on the list, there is still time to volunteer to host an event.
