Annual Fund gears up for calendar year-end

Last December, 2,901 donors gave a total of $797,313 to the Annual Fund. This December the college hopes to exceed that total with the help of our generous alumni, parents, faculty, staff, and friends. New and renewing donors help the college meet its calendar year-end goals and stay on track for its overall fiscal year objectives. Gifts to the Annual Fund support students as they take their final exams and prepare for the transformative adventure to come.

Trustee Rebecca Van Dyck '91 speaks to seniors

Rebecca Van Dyck '91, head of consumer marketing at Facebook and a member of the Macalester College Board of Trustees, was the Class of 2014’s Halfway to May speaker at its Nov. 21 gathering.

Back in November 1990, Van Dyck was a history and psychology major and a member of the women’s soccer team. Since then she has led marketing efforts for such iconic American brands as Nike, Apple, Levi's, and Facebook. In her speech she discussed how the sense of curiosity and adventure developed by Macalester, as well as the way the college honed her ability to think critically and work as part of a team, have made all the difference to her life and career.

Her advice for members of the Class of 2014 as they face their final semester? "Have fun! You're going to be fine. The tools Mac has given you will serve you well."

Cross Country star Kimber Meyer '17 is All-American

Professor Eric Carter's first-year course, Contagion: The Human Ecology of Infectious Diseases, celebrated Kimber Meyer's achievement together. (Meyer is holding the cake.)

Kimber Meyer '17 capped off a great first-year campaign by running to an All-American finish at the NCAA Division III Championships in Hanover, Indiana.

Macalester's first All-American since Megan Auger '00 in 1999, Meyer needed a top-35 finish for All-American honors, and placed an outstanding 22nd out of 280 of the nation's top small college runners, completing the six-kilometer course on the Hanover College campus in 21:50.6. That was second best among all first-year and MIAC runners; the average mile pace was 5:52.

Meyer, who was fourth in the MIAC and Central Region, is the sixth All-American in the program's history and the first first-year All-American since Julia Kirtland '87 in 1983. She is also the first Scot to run at nationals since Erin Lowrey '10 in 2007.

Ethics and the Internet

Is protecting your privacy your job or your fundamental right? That was the question posed one day by philosophy Professor Diane Michelfelder in her Ethics and the Internet class. But don’t bet on the course’s 15 students reaching consensus by semester’s end.

Ethics and the Internet is cross-listed in computer science and philosophy and draws students from a diverse mix of academic backgrounds. The class roster includes first-year students and seniors, and majors ranging from biology to political science.

Macbassador of the Month: Mary Furleigh Woerner '56

In recognition of her service as an Annual Fund class agent, Mary Furleigh Woerner '56 is our Macbassador of the Month for December.

Woerner, an English and Spanish double-major, was an instructor of nursing at the North Iowa Area Community College for over 20 years. As a class agent for the Annual Fund, her handwritten notes and personal phone calls have had a significant impact on her class's giving. Since she began volunteering for the college, Annual Fund support from the Class of 1956 has increased by 9 percent.

"I really loved Mac when I was there and I have lifelong friends I met there that I still keep in touch with," Woerner says. "I felt the values of the college are important. I like to see the emphasis on internationalism, academics, and community service continuing."

Please join us in congratulating Mary Furleigh Woerner '56, our December Macbassador of the Month.
