56 percent of seniors have contributed to Annual Fund

Every year, Macalester seniors give a class gift in celebration of their experiences. The members of the Class of 2014 designated their gift to the Annual Fund to support everything they love about Macalester. As of this publication, 56 percent of the class has contributed.

Harkening back to when they were first-year students, the seniors held a competition to see which group of first-year floormates would have the highest giving percentage in the senior class gift. Doty 1 swept with 100 percent, winning a midnight breakfast back in their old floor's lounge.

Participation in Annual Fund giving at all levels is essential to the well-being of the college. If you haven't already pitched in, please consider making your gift before our fiscal year ends on May 31.

Three seniors honored as Global Citizens

Macalester has long been known for its internationalism. One of the ways it recognizes that value is to annually bestow a Global Citizenship Student Award on the graduating senior who best demonstrates a commitment to the ideals and practice of high academic performance, internationalism, multiculturalism, and civic engagement.

This year, all three finalists for the award—Zack Avre '14 (inset), Lily Alexander '14 (left), and Jocelyne Cardona '14 (right)—were so outstanding that each was proclaimed a winner of the Global Citizenship Student Award.

Can't wait to see these 1,003 alumni at Reunion

The first deadline for registering to attend Reunion 2014 (June 6-8) has passed, but there is still time to join these 1,003 alumni and guests for a fun and action-packed weekend on campus. The final deadline for online registration is June 2. Walk-in registrations will be accepted during Reunion, but seating at class dinners will be subject to availability at an increased rate.

This year's Reunion features back-to-class lectures by favorite professors including Professor Sung Kyu Kim (pictured), a panel discussion about Title IX featuring Ann Bancroft, and special reunions for SWAP participants and Mac Jazz musicians. All alumni, faculty, staff, and their guests are welcome.

Alumni send MacMail postcards to entire Class of 2014

Macalester alumni did it! Since our April edition of Mac Wire, alumni came through with 343 additional handwritten postcards, providing enough to deliver MacMail to every graduating senior. The postcards were delivered to the Class of 2014 on May 6. This was the second year that alumni sent MacMail to all members of the graduating class, a project organized by Neely Crane-Smith '06, associate director of Alumni Relations.

Alumni are continuing to celebrate this year's graduating class by tweeting and posting to Instagram their own graduation photos with the tags #MacGraduation and #MacYY (e.g. #Mac94).

Retired Professor Jerry Fisher '58 passes away

Jerry K. Fisher spoke to his classmates during the Golden Scots Induction Ceremony at their 50-Year Reunion.

Jerry K. Fisher '58, founder and principal architect of Macalester's Japanese Language and East Asian Studies Programs and an internationally recognized cross-cultural educator, passed away on May 8 at age 77. He is survived by his wife Aiko Fisher, his son Andy, his daughter Cindy, and three grandchildren.

Jerry received his Bachelor of Arts from Macalester College in 1959, his Bachelor of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary in 1964, and his Doctor of Philosophy in History from the University of Virginia in 1975. Appointed instructor in history in 1968 at Carroll College in Waukesha, Wisconsin, Jerry returned to his alma mater in 1969 as instructor in history, was promoted to the rank of professor in 1984 and in 1991 was made professor of humanities and media and cultural studies and history, a title that did full justice to his ever-expanding interests and academic engagements.

During the 1970s and early '80s Jerry developed cultural programming and student/faculty exchanges, particularly with Miyagi University of Education in Sendai, Japan, and Tokyo's Waseda University and International Christian University, which ever since have infused the Asian Studies Department with rich educational substance and challenging opportunities.

Ambitious scholarship, imaginative teaching, fearless intellectual risk-taking, and honest ethical engagement with the "real world" were what made Jerry a truly gifted educator. All who have benefitted so richly by learning with him and from him will miss him greatly.

Macbassador of the Month:
David Mao '97

For his continued involvement in multiple spheres of the Macalester community, our Macbassador of the Month for May 2014 is David Mao '97.

David, a music major at Macalester, currently works at Dell and soon will begin an executive MBA program at Columbia University, London Business School, and the University of Hong Kong.

"Macalester had a big part in helping me mature and grow, both as a student and later as an alum," he says. "A lot of my best friends to this day are my Macalester friends, and I want to do my part to ensure that today's Mac students can get access to the high-quality experiences and resources that they need to thrive."

David volunteers as a Class Agent for the Annual Fund, helped organize the Traditions Reunion in 2009, spoke on an Alumni of Color panel at Reunion 2013, and spoke to a Macalester class and a student organization this spring. He does what he can as a volunteer and also provides reliable financial support of the overall student experience as an Annual Fund Sustainer.

"When it comes down to it, Mac is part of my identity. It's like family," he says. "What would it say about me if I didn't volunteer my time to help my family?"

Please join us in congratulating David Mao '97 for being our May Macbassador of the Month.
