A Prairie Home Companion returns to Mac for its 40th anniversary show July 4-6

A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor 40

The 40th Anniversary Music Festival for A Prairie Home Companion will be held at Macalester July 4-6. The first live broadcast of Garrison Keillor's popular radio show took place July 6, 1974, in the Janet Wallace Fine Arts Center at Macalester.

Many free concerts and activities are scheduled throughout the weekend, and local vendors will be on site selling food and beverages. A concert on Friday evening and a live broadcast on Saturday evening are ticketed events, but both are scheduled to be held outdoors and guests are welcome to be present in areas outside the ticketed boundaries.

Macalester's Annual Fund raised $4.02 million in the fiscal year that ended May 31, setting a new record. These funds will help support everything that makes Mac exceptional—from financial aid to academic programming to student summer research.

In total, 12,000 donors gave $13.9 million to the college. We thank our donors for their continuing support.

Macbassador of the Month: Phoebe Wood Busch ’64

In recognition of her contribution to the success of Reunion 2014, our Macbassador of the Month for June 2014 is Phoebe Woods Busch ’64.

Busch was a history major at Macalester who spent 31 years teaching in Colorado where she met her partner of 40 years, Nancy Miller. Busch served on her 50-Year Reunion Planning Committee and was instrumental in creating intergenerational dialogue around LGBTQ issues during Reunion. She organized and moderated the "LGBTQ Life: 1964-2014" panel, which brought together LGBTQ-identified alumni from four different decades.

"I was thrilled with the way it came together," said Busch, "the large number of classmates who attended, and the positive responses from the audience." Busch also wrote a letter "coming out" to her class and encouraging other LGBTQ-identified alumni to attend. "I knew that gays, at least in our closeted generation, rarely attend reunions," she said. "My reason for writing my letter to classmates was simply to encourage any LGBTQ's out there to feel comfortable about attending and bringing their partners/spouses."

In addition to her contributions of time and talent, Busch provides reliable support to the college as a Summit Society member and is also a member of the Wallace Society  which recognizes donors who have made plans to support the college in an estate plan or other form of planned giving.

Please join us in congratulating Phoebe Wood Busch '64 for being our June Macbassador of the Month.
