Hey Mac! Check out Mac Social, a new online space to see what people are saying about Macalester in social media. Mac Social brings together posts on Instagram and Twitter that mention or tag Macalester, as well as Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook posts from the official Macalester College accounts.

Who can participate? Everyone. The posts on Mac Social are from current students, prospective students, alumni, staff, faculty, media outlets, guests, and friends of the college.  We are introducing a new hashtag #heymac that can be used in Instagram and Twitter and tells the Communications team, “Hey! This would be great to put on Mac Social.”

MAC in the City: Hosts needed

MAC in the City

MAC in the City (Macalester Alumni Connect in the City), Macalester's annual worldwide evening alumni social event, will celebrate its five-year anniversary on Thursday, October 2. MAC in the City is an opportunity for alumni, whether new to a region or lifelong residents, to meet each other, reflect upon their experiences at Macalester, and share insights about the resources of their city.

Last year, over 800 alumni attended events at 30 venues in 29 cities spanning five countries. A crew of 53 volunteers helped coordinate these gatherings.

This year the alumni office hopes to organize MAC in the City events in more than 50 locations. Volunteers are needed to organize and host these events.

Host families needed for international students and students of color

Two Macalester host family programs are looking for volunteers for the 2014-2015 academic year: Friends of Macalester International Students (FoMIS) and the Alumni of Color and Friends Host Family Program for Students of Color/Multiracial Students. All Twin Cities alumni, faculty, staff, and friends are welcome to apply.

Through FoMIS, volunteer host families become an international student's link to the larger Twin Cities community. Hosts and students attend a kick-off event in September and typically get together about once a month. Learn more about FoMIS here. To volunteer, complete this form.

Through the Alumni of Color and Friends Host Family Program for Students of Color/Multiracial Students program, hosts build a connection with domestic students of color by meeting with them periodically and helping them feel more at home within the Twin Cities community. Hosts and students attend a kick-off event in September and participate in two additional gatherings per semester throughout the academic year. Hosts are encouraged to plan additional activities with their students. The program is co-sponsored by Alumni Relations and Multicultural Life. To volunteer, complete this form.

All Twin Cities alumni and friends are invited to sign up as hosts for either or both programs.

A Prairie Home Companion and Garrison Keillor returned to Macalester for a 40th Anniversary Celebration on July 4, 5 and 6.  The show's first broadcast was made from Macalester’s Janet Wallace Fine Art Center on July 6, 1974. In addition to the outdoor concerts on the Great Lawn and Shaw Field, performances were also held in Weyerhaeuser Memorial Chapel and Mairs Concert Hall.

Macbassador of the Month:
Heather Lendway ’06

For her steadfast dedication to strengthening the Macalester community, Heather Lendway ’06 is our Macbassador of the Month for July.

Lendway, a math and computer science double major, is a programmer analyst for Securian Financial Group as well as an accomplished triathlete. As a co-chair for the young Macalester Alumni Connect (yMac) steering committee, Lendway provides strong and consistent leadership as well as a welcoming presence at all yMac events. Over the past few years Lendway also dedicated a significant amount of time to working with students as a volunteer coach for swimming and water polo teams, a first-year dinner host, a mentor at student networking events and as a prolific MacMail writer.

"My years at Macalester were some of the greatest," said Lendway. "I feel grateful to have been part of such a unique community of students passionate about the environment, politics, research and so much more. I had incredibly supportive professors and made lifelong friends in my years at Macalester. What I give back to Macalester is nothing compared to what my experience at Macalester gave to me; I'll continue to give what I can in hopes that future students feel the same."

On top of her substantial contributions of time and talent, Lendway is also a sustaining donor for the Annual Fund and a member of the Summit and Grand Societies.

Please join us in congratulating Heather Lendway ’06 for being our July Macbassador of the Month.
